* has no one seen any of this? I'm writing up a summary of where we've
seen it in the North Grenville area, for one of my NG Times articles,
triggered by the discovery of a fairly big stand near where Hwy 43 is
being widened through Kemptville, and I'd like to have more than my
experience with the species.
Here's what I've gotten from Eric Guitard at the RVCA:
It's a little difficult to answer your request since we don't Himalayan
Balsam accurately mapped out for us to determine the extent of the
species throughout Ottawa. However, if you visit our website
(
https://www.rvca.ca/about-us/rvca-corporate-services/rvca-about-publications/city-stream-watch-reports)
we have various City Stream Watch Summary Reports that we publish every
year for the public to access. These reports summarize what we do
throughout four catchments that are chosen that year (and each catchment
or creek is returned to every 6 years). This includes a list of events
such as invasive removals that have been conducted in each creek. I
believe every year there are at least a few invasive removals that
specifically target Himalayan balsam throughout the watershed. For
instance, last year we organized two events that tackled Himalayan
balsam at Bilberry Creek (see page 12 of 2023 Summary Report), and in
2022 we had an event at Sawmill Creek (See page 11 of 2022 Summary
Report). This year we will have a total of 4 events tackling Himalayan
balsam (HB) split between McEwan Creek, and Graham Creek. As far as
extent of the invasive species, I would say they are found in most
catchments/creeks throughout the Rideau Watershed, however, they appear
to have a larger presence in creeks that are located closer to the City
of Ottawa. For instance, Brassils Creek (just West of Kempville), which
we are monitoring this year, is further away from the City of Ottawa and
doesn't have a strong presence of HM according to our stream surveys
this summer.
