Everyone,

We've had 53 mm of rain in Bishops Mills over the past few days. From
reports on facebook, this seems to be as little rain from the Hurricane
Debbie events as anywhere in eastern Ontario.

We were working between buildings, Watching the radar for breaks to run ( Actually for me its a walk ) between them.
A long slow day,  Made worse by watching the not complete landscape work washing away.
Estimate of rain fall was Abt 57 or more MM,   The bucket used to measure overflowed at 57MM.

I need to set up the little el cheapo rain gauge someone sent me.
There were dire predictions of 1 1/2 to 2 inches or more of rain, so I
spent 2 days beforehand doing "storm prep". I opened up the 2 beaver
dams, dropped the lake a couple of inches, it refilled. I will have
to go down there again and try to drop it a few more inches, the lake
level is high. I have some sandbags on hand, heavy duty dog food bags
that I filled with dirt and taped up, put the line of them across the
end of the walkway. When we get really heavy rain there is a stream
of water going down the drive and it spills over onto the walkway and
washes up against the house, then I have to scrape all the gravel and
mud off. The sandbags make a nice wall to prevent that. Set aside
drinking water and charge up all devices and rechargeable flashlights.
So, all of this done and ready for the storm, and we got a lot less
rain than predicted. It was mostly light rain, a couple of times rain
for a few minutes, but nothing that would cause the rivers of rain
that wash out my laneway. Thank goodness!! It just ticked me off
that all this has caused yet another delay and prevented me from going
on the search for my pitcher plants! Argh.

We had very little wind, however, one huge dead oak tree on the
laneway came down. This is a tree that had mostly died except for one
big green branch that has stubbornly held on. I was going to get one
of the guys to cut it down for me in September but it has decided to
come down on its own. I had worried about this tree coming down in a
storm. The bottom was rotting out and it just broke off at ground
level. We have a friend using the cottage for the summer, he came in
late afternoon yesterday and found it across the lane and had to walk
in. We rounded up tools and cut it into manageable lengths in order
to get the vehicles through. This trunk is, withought exaggeration,
at least 30 inches or more in diameter, and mostly solid but with a
couple of hollowed out spots where branches had fallen off. There
were some big grubs, moths, and spiders. When we go to cut it into
blocks I must remember to bring my little camera and a couple
containers, examine the critters that used this tree for a home. On
the bright side, I now have another pile of firewood.

I'm hoping the skies clear out, especially for Monday night, we're
coming up on the Perseid meteor shower. There are also predictions of
auroras in the next couple of days so keep an eye on spaceweather dot
com.
