This morning I disturbed a red-bellied snake in the grass clippings at the door of my hay storage area. This is only the second of its kind that I have seen on my property in 40 years. The first was under some leaves in the carport, two decades ago.

This one was larger than the first, and seemed quite plump in comparison. It was also very active, having been in a sunny, protected location. The hay storage building is right at the junction between the woods and a lawn, while the carport is probably 100 m distant.

I moved it into longer grass toward the forest, where I hope it will be out of the way of impending hay delivery.

I keep thinking that I should lay out some platters and boards in
strategic places but haven't gotten to it yet. I used to find green
snakes, DeKay's, red-bellieds and ring-necked snakes but in these past
few years have only found a couple of DeKay's and a green snake. I
need to provide more cover.

Still haven't gotten into that swamp yet in my Quest for Pitcher
Plants, this morning I'm getting a small load of firewood, looks like
some cold wet mornings coming up and George likes to have the stove on
for an hour to warm up the livingroom. Ugh, this is not the weather
to do it in and I am out of shape! I was on the ridge overlooking
that swamp where I suspect the pitchers live, talking out loud while
peering over the big ferns and low bushes and asking "WHERE are you
hiding?" The rain this summer has the water in there a bit higher
than usual, going to be some fun slogging around in there. But I was
also thinking hey, there's a lot of stuff I haven't photographed and
slapped onto iNaturalist yet. I could spend a few hours in there.

Okay, back to work, gotta chop up the lengths I threw in the truck.
Then a sandwich and a loooooong splash in the lake.
