Volunteer opportunity with natural history collections!
WHO? The non-profit organization Fragile Inheritance is recruiting volunteers to move cabinets and specimens into temporary storage and then into a space in which to sort and curate.
WHERE? Bishops Mills
WHEN? Throughout the month of June, any day and time except Sunday mornings
HOW? In teams of two or three
TO DO? Moving cabinets, shelving, and specimens across the street, from a transport trailer into a screen tent for sorting and boxing, then moving compactly into shipping container.
WHAT? Jars of preserved fish, frogs, snakes, mysterious sea creatures, trays of mussel shells, boxes of dry bones of mammals, birds, fish etc, reptiles and amphibians, boxes of pressed plants, bags of dry vegetation mixed with snail shells, and occasional surprising treasures!
Some specimens are destined for the Canadian Museum of Nature and/or the New Brunswick Museum, and some will be selected as representatives of local fauna & flora for a future museum in North Grenville.
SKILLS REQUIRED: Curiosity, ability to follow instructions, ability to work in a team, taking care with fragile material. Some lifting, depending on strength and agility of volunteer. Some sorting tasks depending on the knowledge and experience of the volunteer.
