NASA studied "Subsonic aircraft Contrail and Cloud Effect Special Studies (SUCCESS) back in the 1997. https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20020046799

Funny thing, when I read their study's report back then, (while being called a conspiracy theorist for talking about it) they noted they couldn't recreate the "persistent contrails" they were already seeing, with their ER-2 aircraft using different jet fuels. Maybe it was because what they were seeing wasn't normal contrails.
