Folks,

Would appreciate it if anyone has any FFMPEG cheat sheets or similar that demonstrate what format / codec combinations work.

For the life of me I haven't been able to get anything to render out of this node.

Aiming for some form of H264 / MP4 like codec.

I've been over to the FFMPEG documentation but it's not for the faint of heart

thanks all,

Paul

Hi,

Yes there seem to be an issue with most mp4 codecs, they all render blocky videos, see https://github.com/MrKepzie/Natron/issues/478
For now I’ve found that .mov + Apple Pro Res works fine, though I would not recommend exporting directly to video for now, an image sequence would yield a better quality which you can then convert to video using ffmpeg in command line.

We will try to see what’s wrong when we get time for it

Alex

Thanks for the reply. Actually, the reason I was examining the option to export to a video codec is because I've been having persistent issues when exporting to image sequence. I've tried BMP, PNG, and EXR, and in all cases over 300 or so frames, I'm finding that some frames are rendered quite a bit darker than others which leads to flickering when composited together into one video. Everything looks good in the viewer with all frames rendering consistently. It's only when I output via the write node.

I wonder if anyone has had similar issues. Not sure if this is a bug yet, or human error.

Sounds like a bug.

If you want you can open an issue on github about it.

We would require the project to be able to reproduce and track down the bug correctly.

Also, have you tried rendering with the snapshots ? Maybe the bug is already fixed with Natron 2.0

I'm away from my office right now. Once I am back with the project files I'll post as a bug once I've checked the latest snapshot.

thanks.

I'm pleased to say that this issue appears resolved. I was formerly rendering to an image sequence with 1.2.1. and earlier. With the 2.0.0. snapshot all went well. (Digging all the other stability fixes too.)

Great work.

Here's my final (first) render with Natron:

Looking forward to seeing what I can try next.

I rewrote WriteFFmpeg from the ground up.
We now have a few validated codecs. ProRes works, as well as a few others.

H.264 and HEVC/H.265 will work if a GPL-licensed version of FFmpeg is used. Unfortunately, we cannot distribute it with Natron, but we will make a separate package.

Unfortunately, DNxHD still shifts the colors a bit, so I disabled it in the builds, but it could come next.

besides writing Prores Mov, can Natron also read Apple Prores on Linux?

that would be awesome, cause my Nuke8.0 doesnt and i need to convert quite a lot of footage next week.

I think ffmpeg support Prores.
If you can read your videos with vlc on linux, so ffmpeg will support it.
