2D photo and graphic image applications are still needed in the filming industry. I use vector masks and paths to extract a lot of objects out of images using Gimp and Photoshop. Both of these programs allow you to export their paths data information. It would be ashame if multiple layers of paths could not follow the image that they were from into a compositor for mask animations and/or roto splines.

So my question is, does it make since for the roto node to have the ability to import 3rd party paths from 2d photo editors to bridge the gap between layer and node base compositors for masking and roto compositing.

This is actually very easy to do since the library we use for the vector graphics (Cairo) already provide a SVG import option.
The question is more of a technical one, should the user be able to import things that he/she couldn't do with the roto node by itself in the first place ?
Because with Photoshop you can do much more advanced stuff than just roto something. THen if you would load the SVG into Natron we would have to keep only the "paths" information

That sounds like a plan for V2.0.

Please make a enhancement request on Github and we will add it to the feature list
