Naturopathic History and Philosophy
Dr. Blake will be offering a course in Naturopathic History and
Philosophy Spring Quarter 2010. The course covers the evolution of
the profession, the schools, laws, theory, clinical experience, and
philosophy, etc. over the course of the 20th century. Each week a
decade is covered. The course is an easy format of 1 lecture hour
with discussion. The course will review handpicked selections from
the rare naturopathic journals and books of each decade to see in
their own words what the naturopaths of the time were thinking and
seeing. This work is very hard to access and it is not available in
an organized fashion anywhere else. The course packets are a treasure
trove of Naturopathic insight. (For those who would like to delve
into more detail the additional recommended texts provide additional
academic scholarship).
We will review not the dry facts of history, but the relevant
observations, skill sets, theoretical, and diagnostic approaches of
the profession - such as the almost forgotten Naturopathic Basic
Diagnosis - this will be reviewed in the course. Cases from the
different decades will be reviewed, advertisements, therapeutic
modalities, etc. The journal and textbook selections in the course
packet will be useful not only for the course but for future reference
and skill development. Participants will walk away with a solid
understanding of the professions 20th century history - not hazy rumor
but examination of the actual literature in detail, a solid foundation
to forge individual identity of the areas of Natural health that
resonate within us. The large world of Naturopathy and the
implications and influence of our journey through the 20th century
will be discussed. A fun course that participants in the past have
enjoyed whether new to the ND program or about to graduate as doctors.
The course is open to all students. The syllabus details are below.
Dr. Blake was a history editor for the Foundations of Naturopathic
Medicine project and wrote the chapter on history for the textbook
Naturopathic Physical Medicine. Dr. Blake worked with the assistance
of the naturopathic librarian Friedhelm Kirchfeld for 8 years
researching and documenting the professions history. He holds a
degree in cultural anthropology with a focus on cultural and social
historical evolution and is uniquely qualified to offer this course.
If you are thinking of waiting to take this course - do not hesitate.
The course will not be offered again unless the student body
demonstrates an active interest in the course at this time. What
choice will you make?
