Natives

Please see below from Nordic legend Charlie Dee.  He’s a true friend of the sport.  If you’ve been on a ski trail you’ve benefited from his advocacy and support.  Please join me in supporting Charlie for the Birkie Board.  Join the ABSF even if you’re not planning on skiing the Birkie this year.   The trail needs our support either way and you’ll be able to vote for Charlie.

Thanks,
Goldy

Subject: Birkie registration and Board

Dear Friends and Fellow Skiers,

Registration for the Birkie opened up on Monday.  I’m registered.  Are you?  I hope when you registered, you contributed to the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF).  That offers your support for continuing the Birkie and also gives you a vote for the Birkie Board, so you can vote for me when the ballots come out next month. The minimum donations is $30 (one vote) or $60 for a Family membership (two votes).  If you didn’t join ABSF when you registered, you still can.  Just click on Birkie Board and join now.

I need to ask you for a simple favor.  Please forward this email to all of your ski friends.  If only the people I know vote for me, I can’t get elected, but if the friends of friends all support me, I’m a shoo-in.

Here’s my admittedly incomplete list of the important challenges facing the Birkie that I think I can help with:

·      Replacing Director of Race Operations, Shellie Milford, aka, heart and soul of the Birkie, who’s retiring after the next race.
·      Restoring chip timing that starts up the trail rather than gun time so people in the back of waves are not penalized.
·      Nailing down a permanent start, preferably where it is now, and permanent storage facility at the start.
·      Finding replacements for the aging and shrinking corps of volunteers.
·      Increasing efforts to develop youth skiing in the region
·      Insuring smooth transition over the next year as the Birkie office re-locates while present office is being expanded and renovated
·      Establishing an endowment. Costs for plowing parking lots and food stations doubled this year. The Birkie should be in the wills of boomers like me, but until the Birkie asks, nobody will give.
·      Establishing more efficient access to and better facilities for medical staff and volunteers at feed stations.

I certainly don’t have solutions to all these issues, but I have ideas and decades of experience working collaboratively to solve problems:

·      35 years experience on numerous non-profit boards
·      39 years experience as an ambassador for the sport
·      Co-founder, VP, and former President, Wisconsin Nordic Network
·      Member and contributor to Friends of Lapham Peak, Northern Kettle Moraine Nordic Ski Club, Cedar Lake Conservation Foundation (Fox Hills), Iola Nordic Ski Club, Central Cross Country Skiing Masters, American Birkebeiner Foundation

So please register, join the ABSF, send this email to all your ski buddies, and vote for me for the Birkie Board next month.

See you on the trail,
Charlie Dee
