See below from Birkie board member Charlie Dee.  If you haven’t joined the Birkie Foundation or renewed your membership, please use Charlie’s links to do that.  Charlie is an incredibly hardworking and dedicated board member and we want to retain him.  The overall election turnout is low.  Every vote counts and is needed.  Please join/vote

Subject: July Birkie Update, Board Election

Dear Fellow Skiers,

No matter how much you bike, swim, paddle, run, I know skiing is still on your mind.  It’s certainly on mine.
W
AVES FILLING UP, FEE BUMP SOON

If you haven’t registered for next year’s Birkie or Korte yet, you’d better get on it.  Registration is running 10% ahead of last year’s, and some waves are 80% filled. In addition, this Friday, July 8, the registration fee will jump by $10.  Here’s the link to register: http://www.birkie.com/ski/events/birkie/

PLEASE VOTE FOR BIRKIE BOARD

I’m up for re-election to the Birkie Board this summer, and I would sure appreciate you voting for me.  You must be a member of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation to vote.  If you haven’t registered for next year’s race, you can join the foundation when you register at the link above. If you’re already set for the 2017 Birkie or Korte but didn’t join the foundation, then click here to join: http://www.birkie.com/membership/

The membership is $30, and for $60 you can be a family member and get two votes!  All of this is tax-deductible, and the fee goes to support Birkie operations like our mission for youth skier development.  Here’s a link to my candidate statement on the Birkie Website: http://cdn.birkie.com/wpcontent/uploads/2015/07/dee.applicationBirkie.16_complete.pdf

Some of my friends are sending out emails to their ski contacts urging them to join and vote for me.  If you’d like to do that, zap me back, and I’ll provide you with talking points and a sample email. Simply put, I’d like to continue my efforts to increase the efficiency, transparency and democracy of the foundation in order to sustain our race and strengthen the Birkie’s mission of promoting healthy lifestyles to future generations.  You will receive a ballot via email soon and must return it by August 5 unless you attend our annual meeting in Cable and vote in person.

NEW START AREA If you click on the attached photo you'll see something to get excited about: the almost-complete new Birkie Start Area. The big building in the background will serve as the warming area for people awaiting their wave start.  During the off-season it will allow us to store equipment and supplies that are now in several locations spread across two different counties!  In the foreground is a warming hut for people using the new start as a trailhead and a timing/announcing building for races.  In fact, the Wisconsin High School Nordic Championships will be held there next February.

BIRKIE TRAIL KIDS This is another program the Birkie backs to promote active, outdoor lifestyles and attract another generation of skiers to our great sport.  Two mornings a week kids 7-13 are offered instruction in mountain biking, trail running, canoeing, orienteering and other sports on the Birkie Trail for a minimal cost.  Sorry I didn’t tell you about this earlier although it’s definitely most convenient for families living in BirkieLand.

Please call me if you have any questions, concerns or if you want to promote my re-election with your friends.
