Public consultations held by the Uniform Civil Code Committee, Gujarat, in New Delhi
New Delhi, 12 April 2025: Two rounds of public consultations were held by the Uniform Civil Code Committee at Gujarat Bhawan, New Delhi.
In the first round, the committee held consultations with representatives of the Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti. In all 18 representatives of the Samiti presented their views on a number of issues, including the jurisdiction of the State in legislating on the subject, and the conflict between the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution and Article 44 of the Constitution, which is part of the Directive Principles of State Policy. They also promised to submit their detailed written representation before 15th April 2025.
In the second round of public consultation, the committee heard the views of Shree Delhi Gujarati Samaj. 14 Representatives took part in the consultation process. The representatives of the Samaj expressed their support for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in Gujarat.
The interactions with both delegations—the Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti and the Shree Delhi Gujarati Samaj—were conducted in a cordial and constructive manner
During the process of both consultations, the Chairperson of the UCC Committee, Justice (Retd.) Ranjana Prakash Desai; Senior Advisor Shri Shatrughna Singh; and members—retired senior IAS officer Mr. C.L. Meena, advocate Mr. R.C. Kodekar, former Vice-Chancellor Mr. Dakshesh Thakkar, and social activist Ms. Geetaben Shroff—were present. The consultation meeting was also attended by the Resident Commissioner, Dr. Vikrant Pandey and Sheetal Goswami Secretary to the UCC Committee.
