Dear Friends,

The National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 1133 candidates and 500 MPs/MLAs, who changed parties and recontested elections held during the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections since 2014. The previous report on “MPs/ MLAs who changed parties" released on 11 Mar 21, covered the period from 2016- 2021. This analysis is based on the affidavits submitted by the candidates prior to the elections (2014 to 2021) and bye-elections conducted in the intervening period.

Party-wise share of Candidates and MPs/MLAs who changed Political Parties


Candidates 

  • Maximum number of candidates, 222(20%) left INC to join another party during the elections held between 2014-2021. While 153 (14%) candidates left BSP to join a different party to contest elections during this period.
  • Between 2014-2021, 253 (22%) out of the total of 1133 re-contesting candidates who switched political parties joined the BJP followed by 115 (10%) candidates who joined INC and 65 (6%) candidates who joined BSP.

 

MPs/MLAs 

  • Highest number of MPs/MLAs, 177(35%), left INC to join another party during the elections held between 2014-2021. While 33 (7%) MPs/MLAs left BJP to join a different party to contest elections during this period.

  • Between 2014-2021, 173 (35%) out of 500 recontesting MPs/MLAs who switched political parties joined the BJP followed by 61 (12%) MPs/MLAs who joined INC and 31(6%) MPs/MLAs who joined AITC.
