Dear Friends,

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Nagaland Election Watch have analyzed the criminal, financial and other background details of all 60 sitting MLAs. This analysis is based on the affidavits submitted by the candidates prior to the 2018 Assembly elections and bye elections conducted thereafter.

Criminal Background

  • MLAs with criminal cases: Out of 60 sitting MLAs analysed, 2 (3%) MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • MLAs with serious criminal cases: 2 (3%) MLAs have declared serious criminal cases.
  • Party wise sitting MLAs with criminal cases: 1(2%) out of 42 MLAs from NDPP and 1 (8%) out of 12 MLAs from BJP have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Party wise sitting MLAs with serious criminal cases:  1(2%) out of 42 MLAs from NDPP and 1 (8%) out of 12 MLAs from BJP have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Financial Background

  • Crorepati MLAs: Out of 60 sitting MLAs analysed , 45 (75%) are crorepatis.
  • Party wise crorepati MLAs: 32 (76%)out of 42 MLAs from NDPP, 9 (75%) out of 12 MLAs from BJP, 3 (75%) out of 4 MLAs from NPF and 1(50%) out of 2 Independent MLAs have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore.

  • Average assets: The average of assets per sitting MLA is Rs.5.14 crore.
  • Party wise average assets: The average assets per MLA for 42 NDPP MLAs analysed is Rs.5.73 crores, 12 BJP MLAs analysed is Rs.3.68 crores, 4 NPF MLAs analysed is Rs.5.34 crores and 2 Independent MLAs have average assets of Rs.1.13 crores.

Other Background Details

  • Education Details of MLAs:  19 (32%) MLAs have declared their education qualification to be between 8th pass and 12th pass while 40 (67%) MLAs have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above and one MLA had declared himself as illiterate.
  • Age details of MLAs:  10 (17%) MLAs have declared their age to be between 31 and 40 years while 32 (53%) MLAs have declared their age to be between 41 and 60 years.There are 17(28%) MLAs who have declared their age to be between 61 to 80 years and 1 MLA had declared his age above 80 years.
  • Gender details of MLAs: Out of 60 MLAs analysed, none are women.
