Dear Friends,
The Karnataka Election Watch, Bengaluru Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 384 out of 389 candidates, who are contesting in the following 28 constituencies of Bengaluru region in the Karnataka 2023 Assembly elections.

Criminal Background    

  • Candidates with Criminal Cases: Out of 384 candidates analyzed, 92 (24%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.  
  • Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 57 (15%) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

  • Party wise Candidates with Criminal Cases: Among the major parties,14(50%) out of 28 candidates analysed from BJP, 19(70%) out of 27 candidates analysed from INC, 9 (38%) out of 24 candidates analysed from JD(S) and 9 (32%) out of 28 candidates analysed from AAP have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Party wise Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases:  Among the major parties,9(32%) out of 28 candidates analysed from BJP, 10(37%) out of 27 candidates analysed from INC, 8 (33%) out of 24 candidates analysed from JD(S) and 1 (4%) out of 28 candidates analysed from AAP have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Candidates with declared cases related to crime against women: 5 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women.
  • Candidates with declared cases related to murder: 4 candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section-302) against themselves.
  • Candidates with declared cases related to attempt to murder: 9 candidates have declared cases related to Attempt to murder (IPC Section-307) against themselves.

  • Crorepati Candidates: Out of the 384 candidates, 157(41%) are crorepatis.
  • Party wise Crorepati Candidates: The role of money power in our elections is evident from the fact that all major political parties give tickets to wealthy candidates. Among the major parties 26(96%) out of 27 candidates analysed from INC, 27(96%) out of 28 candidates analysed from BJP, 21(88%) out of 24 candidates analysed from JD(S) and 25(89%) out of 28 candidates analysed from AAP have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore.

  • Average assets: The average of assets per candidate contesting in the 28 constituencies of Bengaluru region in the Karnataka 2023 Assembly elections is Rs 24.48 Crore.  

  • Party wise average assets: Among major parties, the average assets for 27 INC candidates analysed is Rs. 145.26 Crores, 28 BJP candidates analysed Rs 63 Crores, 24 JD(S) candidates have average assets of Rs 54.97 Crores and 28 AAP have average assets worth Rs 10.37 Crores.

  • Undeclared PAN:  A total of 2(1%) candidates have not declared their PAN details. 


Other Background Details

  • Education details of candidates: 213(55%) candidates have declared their educational qualifications to be between 5th and 12th standard while 145(38%) candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. 19 candidates are Diploma holders. 3 candidates have declared themselves to be just literate and 3 candidates are Illiterates. 1 candidate has not given his educational qualification.
  • Age details of candidates: 117(30%) candidates have declared their age to be between 25 to 40 years while 220 (57%) candidates have declared their age to be between 41 to 60 years.  There are 46 (12%) candidates who have declared their age to be between 61 to 80 years and 1 candidate has declared his age as 82 years.
  • Gender details of candidates: 38(10%) female candidates are contesting in the 28 constituencies of Bengaluru region in the Karnataka 2023 Assembly elections.
