Press Release: Analysis of Vote Share and Margin of Victory of Winners in Nagaland Assembly Elections, 2023

Dear Friends,

Association for Democratic Reforms and Nagaland Election Watch have analysed the vote share for the 59 constituencies in the Nagaland Assembly Elections, 2023. Data for vote share for Akuluto (ST) constituency is not available due to BJP candidate Kazheto winning the election unopposed.


Summary and Highlights


Vote Share of Winners

  • The winners of the Nagaland State Assembly elections, 2023 won by an average of 54 % of total votes polled. In the 2018 elections winners won by an average of 49 % of total votes polled.

  • 46(78%) winners won with 50% and above of the total votes polled in their constituency.
  • 13(22%) winners won with less than 50% of the total votes polled in their constituency.

  • The 2 winners with declared criminal cases have won with a vote share of 50% and above.
  • 39(76%) out of 51 crorepati winners have won with a vote share of 50% and above.

Margin of Victory
  • 11 winners have won with a margin of victory of less than 500 votes.
  • 6 winners have won with more than 40% margin of victory. 

Winners with Declared Criminal Cases and their Margin of Victory
  • The 2 winners with declared criminal cases have won against a runner up with a clean background.
  • Among these 2 winners, 1 winner has won with more than 10% margin of victory. 
  • A. Pangjung Jamir (BJP) from Tuli (ST) Constituency won with 17.16% margin of victory.  

Crorepati Winners and their Margin of Victory
  • 12 out of 51 crorepati winners have won against a non-crorepati runners up.
  • Among these 12 winners, 3 winners have won with more than 40 % margin of victory.
  • Among these, Neiphiu Rio (NDPP) from Northern Angami-II (ST) constituency won with 86% margin of victory. 

Performance of Women Winners
  • Among the 59 winners, 2 are women.
  • The 2 women winners have won with less than 10% margin of victory.
  • Among the women winners, Salhoutuonuo Kruse (NDPP) from Western Angami (ST) Constituency has won with the highest vote share, i.e. 50% in her constituency and 0.05% margin of victory.

Performance of Re-elected Winners
  • Out of total 22 re-elected winners, none have won with less than 20% of vote share in their respective constituencies. 17(77%) have won with more than 50% of vote share.  
  • 6(27%) re-elected winners have won with less than 10% margin of victory whereas 4 have won with more than 50% margin of victory.

NOTA
  • The NOTA button instated by the ECI in 2013 gave the voters an option of rejecting all the candidates in their constituency. Out of 11, 44,709 votes polled in Nagaland Assembly, 2023, 3,508 (0.31%) were polled for NOTA.
