Dear Friends,

Association for Democratic Reforms and National Election Watch have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 58 out 59 candidates contesting for Rajya Sabha Elections to be held on 27th February, 2024 for 56 seats in 15 states. One candidate namely G.C. Chandrashekar (INC) contesting from Karnataka has not been analysed as his affidavit was badly scanned.

Criminal Background  

  • Rajya Sabha Candidates with declared criminal cases: Out of the 58 Rajya Sabha Candidates analysed, 21(36%) Rajya Sabha Candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • Rajya Sabha Candidates with declared serious criminal cases: 10 (17%) Rajya Sabha Candidates have declared serious criminal cases.
  • Rajya Sabha Candidates with declared cases related to attempt to murder:  1 Rajya Sabha Candidate has declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section 307).
  • Party wise Rajya Sabha Candidates with criminal cases: 8(27%) out of 30 Candidates from BJP, 6 (67%) out of 9 Candidates from INC, 1 (25%) out of 4 Candidates from AITC, 2(67%) out of 3 Candidates from SP, 1(33%) out of 3 Candidates from YSRCP, 1(50%) out of 2 Candidates from RJD, 1(50%) out of 2 Candidates from BJD and 1(100%) Candidate from BRS have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Party wise Rajya Sabha Candidates with serious criminal cases: 3(10%) out of 30 Candidates from BJP, 4 (44%) out of 9 Candidates from INC, 1 (25%) out of 4 Candidates from AITC, 1(33%) out of 3 Candidates from SP and 1(100%) Candidate from BRS have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

  • State Wise Rajya Sabha Candidates with serious criminal cases: 2(18%) out of 11 Candidates from Uttar Pradesh, 1 (17%) out of 6 Candidates from Maharashtra, 1(20%) out of 5 Candidates from West Bengal, 3(100%) out of 3 Candidates from Telangana, 2(67%) out of 3 Candidates from Rajasthan and 1(50%) out of 2 Candidates from Himachal Pradesh have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
