Dear Friends,

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) have analyzed and updated the criminal, financial and other background details of 226 out of 233 Rajya Sabha MPs. In the current Rajya Sabha, four seats from West Bengal state are vacant. Three MPs have not been analysed as their affidavits were unavailable.



Summary and Highlights

Criminal background

  • Rajya Sabha sitting MPs with criminal cases: Out of the 226 Rajya Sabha Sitting MPs analysed, 69(31%) Rajya Sabha Sitting MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • Rajya Sabha sitting MPs with serious criminal cases: 36 (16%) Rajya Sabha Sitting MPs have declared serious criminal cases.
  • Rajya Sabha sitting MPs with declared cases related to murder: 1 Rajya Sabha Sitting MP has declared cases related to murder (IPC section 302).
  • Rajya Sabha sitting MPs with declared cases related to attempt to murder:  4 Rajya Sabha Sitting MPs have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section 307).
  • Rajya Sabha sitting MPs with declared cases related to Crime Against Women: 4 Rajya Sabha Sitting MPs have declared cases related to crimes against women.
  • Party wise Rajya Sabha sitting MPs with criminal cases: 28(26%) out of 107 Rajya Sabha MPs from BJP, 12 (41%) out of 29 Rajya Sabha MPs from INC, 2 (22%)  out of 9 Rajya Sabha MPs from AITC, 2(25%) out of 8 Rajya Sabha MPs from DMK, 2(50%) out of 4 Rajya Sabha MPs from SP, 3(75%) out of 4 Rajya Sabha MPs from TDP, 3(100%) out of 3 Rajya Sabha MPs from BRS, 3(100%) out of 3 Rajya Sabha MPs from CPI(M), 2(67%) out of 3 Rajya Sabha MPs from RJD, 1(25%) out of 4 Rajya Sabha MPs from AIADMK, 1(25%) out of 4 Rajya Sabha MPs from NCP and 1(33%) out of 3 Rajya Sabha MPs from AAP have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Party wise Rajya Sabha sitting MPs with serious criminal cases:  14(13%) out of 107 Rajya Sabha MPs from BJP, 8 (28%) out of 29 Rajya Sabha MPs from INC, 2 (22%)  out of 9 Rajya Sabha MPs from AITC, 1(13%) out of 8 Rajya Sabha MPs from DMK, 1(25%) out of 4 Rajya Sabha MPs from SP, 1(25%) out of 4 Rajya Sabha MPs from TDP, 1(33%) out of 3 Rajya Sabha MPs from BRS, 2(67%) out of 3 Rajya Sabha MPs from CPI(M), 1(25%) out of 4 Rajya Sabha MPs from NCP and 1(33%) out of 3 Rajya Sabha MPs from AAP have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
