Dear Friends,

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 23 re-elected MPs between 2004 to 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Criminal Background

  • Re-elected MPs with criminal cases: Out of the 23 Re-elected MPs analysed, 12 (52%) Re-elected MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • Re-elected MPs with serious criminal cases: 9 (39%) Re-elected MPs have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, dacoity etc.
  • Party wise Percentage of Re-elected MPs with Criminal Cases: 7(41%) out of 17 Re-elected MPs from BJP, 3 (100%) out of 3 Re-elected MPs from INC, 1 (100%) Re-elected MP from AIMIM and 1(100%) Re-elected MP from SHS have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Party wise Percentage of Re-elected MPs with Serious Criminal Cases: 5(29%) out of 17 Re-elected MPs from BJP, 3 (100%) out of 3 Re-elected MPs from INC and 1(100%) Re-elected MP from AIMIM have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

  • Jigajinagi Ramesh Chandappa of BJP from Bijapur constituency has declared maximum increase in assets with an increase of Rs 49.86 Crores i.e from Rs 54.80 Lakhs in 2004 to Rs. 50.41 Crores in 2019.
  • Assets of Maneka Sanjay Gandhi of BJP from Sultanpur constituency has increased by Rs 49.02 Crores, from Rs 6.66 Crores in 2004 to Rs 55.69 Crores in 2019.
  • Assets of Rao Inderjit Singh of BJP from Gurgaon constituency have risen by Rs 36.58 Crores, from Rs 5.51 Crores in 2004 to Rs 42.09 Crores in 2019

  • Education Details of Re-elected MPs:  4(17.4%) Re-elected MPs have declared their educational qualification to be between 10th and 12th standard while 18 (78.3%) Re-elected MPs have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above and 1 Re-elected MP is Diploma holder.
  • Age details of Re-elected MPs:  4 (17.4%) Re-elected MPs have declared their age to be between 40 to 50 years while 19 (82.6%) Re-elected MPs have declared their age to be between 51 to 80 years.
  • Gender details of Re-elected MPs: Out of 23 Re-elected MPs analysed, 3 (13%) Re-elected MPs are women.
