Dear Friends,

National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 57 newly elected MPs of Rajya Sabha 2022.

Criminal background


  • MPs with criminal cases: Out of the 57 MPs analysed, 23 (40%) MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • MPs with serious criminal cases: 12 (21%) MPs have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to Murder, attempt to murder, theft etc.
  • MPs with cases related to Murder: 1 MP has declared case of murder (IPC Section-302).
  • MPs with cases related to Attempt to Murder: 1 MP has declared case of attempt to murder (IPC Section-307).
  • MPs with cases related to Crimes against Women: 1 MP has declared cases related to crimes against women.
  • Party wise MPs with criminal cases: 9 (41%) out of 22 MPs from BJP, 4 (44%) out of 9 MPs from INC, 2 (100%) out of 2 MPs from TRS, 2 (100%) out of 2 MPs from RJD and 1 MP each from YSRCP (25%), DMK (33%), AIADMK (50%), SP (100%), SHS (100%), Independent (50%) have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • State wise MPs with criminal cases: 6 out of 11 (55%) MPs from Uttar Pradesh, 4 out of 6 (67%) MPs from Maharashtra, 3 out of 6 (50%) MPs from Tamil Nadu, 4 out of 5 (80%) MPs from Bihar, 2 out of 2 (100%) Telangana MPs, 1 out of 4 (25%) MPs from Andhra Pradesh, 1 out of 2 (50%) MPs from Chhattisgarh, 1 out of 4 (25%) MPs from Rajasthan and 1 out of 2 (50%) MPs from Haryana have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Other background details
  • Education Details of MPs:  8 (14%) MPs have declared their education qualification to be between 8th pass and 12th pass, while 23 (40%) MPs have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or graduate professional. 17 (30%) MPs have declared themselves to be postgraduates while 7 (12%) MPs have declared they are Doctorates and 2 MPs have declared Diploma.
  • Age details of MPs: 30 (53%) MPs have declared their age to be between 31 and 60 years while 27 (47%) MPs have declared their age to be between 61 and 81 years. The oldest MP is Thiru. S. Kalyanasundaram aged 81 years from Tamil Nadu and the youngest MP is Mohd. Imaran Khan aged 34 from Maharashtra.
  • Gender details of MPs: Out of 57 MPs, only 10 (18%) newly elected MPs are women.
