Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch have analysed the self- sworn affidavits of 492 candidates out of 821 who are contesting for the Nasik Municipal Corporation Elections, scheduled to be held on 21st February, 2017. There are total 122 seats spread across 31 wards (29 wards will elect 4 members each and 2 wards will elect 3 members each). The rest of the affidavits were not analysed as they were not available or uploaded on the website at the time of making this report.
The main Highlights of the report are given below:
Criminal Background
· Candidates with Criminal Cases: 46 (9%) out of 492 analyzed candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
· Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 34 (7%) out of 492 analyzed candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, criminal intimidation, dacoity, robbery, cheating, forgery, etc.
· Party wise Candidates with declared Criminal Cases:
5 (8%) out of 62 candidates analysed from BJP, 11 (18%) out of 62 candidate analysed from Shivsena, 5 (9%) out of 56 candidate analysed from MNS, 9 (28%) out of 32 candidate analysed from NCP and 1 (4%) out of 27 candidates analysed from INC have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
· Party wise Candidates with declared Serious Criminal Cases: 2 (3%) out of 62 candidates analysed from BJP, 7 (11%) out of 62 candidate analysed from Shivsena, 3 (5%) out of 56 candidate analysed from MNS, 6 (19%) out of 32 candidate analysed from NCP and 1 (4%) out of 27 candidates analysed from INC have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
