Dear Friends,

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Jammu & Kashmir Election Watch have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 90 winning candidates in the Jammu & Kashmir 2024 Assembly Elections.

Criminal Background   

  • Winning candidates with criminal cases: Out of the 90 winning candidates analysed in 2024 9(10%) winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. Out of 87 MLAs analysed during Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections in 2014, 5(6%) MLAs had declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • Winning candidates with serious criminal cases: 8(9%) winning candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. Out of 87 MLAs analysed during Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections in 2014, 2 (2%) MLAs had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

  • Party wise winning candidates with criminal cases: 5(12%) out of 42 Winning candidates from JKNC, 2(7%) out of 29 Winning candidates from BJP, 1(33%) out of 3 Winning candidates from JKPDP and 1 (100%) AAP winning candidate have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Party wise winning candidates with serious criminal cases: 4(10%) out of 42 Winning candidates from JKNC, 2(7%) out of 29 Winning candidates from BJP, 1(33%) out of 3 Winning candidates from JKPDP and 1 (100%) AAP winning candidate have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Financial Background

  • Crorepati Winning candidates: Out of the 90 winning candidates analysed, 76 (84%) are crorepatis. Out of 87 MLAs analysed during Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections 2014, 65 (75%) MLAs were crorepatis.

  • Party-wise crorepati winning candidates: 37(88%) out of 42 winning candidates from JKNC, 25 (86%) out of 29 winning candidates from BJP, 6 (100%) winning candidates from INC, 2 (67%) out of 3 winning candidates from JKPDP, 1 (100%) winning candidate from CPI(M), 1 (100%) winning candidate from Jammu & Kashmir People Conference and 4(57%) out of 7 Independent winning candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.

  • Party wise average assets: The average assets per winning candidate for 29 BJP winning candidates is Rs 14.55 Crores, 42 Jammu & Kashmir National Conference winning candidates is Rs 8.47 Crores, 6 INC winning candidates is Rs 30.12 Crores, 3 Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party winning candidates is Rs 4.25 Crores, 1 Jammu & Kashmir People Conference winner candidate is Rs 20.79 Crores, 1 CPI(M) winner candidate is Rs 1.65 Crores, 1 AAP winner candidate is Rs 29.07 Thousand and 7 Independent winning candidates have average assets worth Rs 4.99 Crores.

Other Background Details

  • Education Details of winning candidates:  25 (28%) winning candidates have declared their educational qualification to be between 8th pass and 12th pass, while 63 (70%) winning candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate and above and  2 winning candidates who are Diploma holders.
  • Age details of winning candidates: 29 (32%) winning candidates have declared their age to be between 25 and 50 years while 61 (68%) winning candidates have declared their age to be between 51 and 80 years.
  • Gender details of winning candidates: Out of 90 winning candidates analysed, 3 (3%) winning candidates are women. In 2014, out of 87 MLAs, 3 (3%) MLAs were women.
