Dear Friends,
Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Chhattisgarh Election Watch have analyzed the criminal, financial and other background details of 88 out of 90 sitting MLAs.

This analysis is based on the affidavits submitted by the candidates prior to the 2018 Assembly elections and bye elections conducted thereafter.

In the current assembly, 2 seats are vacant in the following constituencies:

  • MLAs with criminal cases: Out of 88 sitting MLAs analysed, 21 (24%) Sitting MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • MLAs with serious criminal cases: 11 (13%) Sitting MLAs have declared serious criminal cases.
  • MLAs with declared cases related to attempt to murder: 1 Sitting MLA has declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC section 307).
  • Party wise sitting MLAs with criminal cases: 18 (25%) out of 71 MLAs from INC and 3 (21%) out of 14 BJP MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
  • Party wise sitting MLAs with serious criminal cases: 11 (15%) out of 71 INC MLAs have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Financial Background

  • Crorepati MLAs: Out of 88 sitting MLAs analysed, 65 (74%) are crorepatis.
  • Party wise crorepati MLAs: 50 (70%) out of 71 MLAs from INC, 13 (93%) out of 14 MLAs from BJP, 1 (50%) out of 2 MLAs from BSP and 1 (100%) Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) MLAs have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore.

  • Average assets: The average of assets per sitting MLA is Rs.10.50 crore.
  • Party wise average assets: The average assets per MLA for 71 INC MLAs analysed is Rs.11.51 crores, 14 BJP MLAs analysed is Rs.6.71 crores, 2 BSP MLAs analysed is Rs.2.04 crores and one Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J)  MLA has assets worth Rs.8.30 crores.
