Come visit us in Des Moines!
Looking for a change? The Des Moines Catholic Worker is very low on community members right now. We would welcome a cross-pollination experience if you are a roaming Catholic Worker of the world, a former Catholic Worker, or if you are a current Catholic Worker and your house can spare you for a couple of months.
The Des Moines Catholic Worker has four houses including one house of hospitality in the historic River Bend neighborhood of Des Moines. We have scaled back operations due to COVID right now. We are currently serving meals through a to-go window and distributing hygiene and other items. We are open four hours a day, five days a week. Community members are asked to participate 3-4 days a week and help out with other tasks as well as join our weekly community meeting. You can expect about 20 hours a week of community work (mostly afternoon/evening) with lots of time to explore the city, read, or whatever else floats your boat.
In addition to hospitality, the community is very active in social justice, racial justice, and resistance to war and empire. There is also a small community liturgy five mornings a week if that is something you are interested in. (but not required)
Ideally, interested folks would be able to stay at least 2-3 months to get us through until spring, but if you have another idea, let us know! We are also always looking for folks to join our community long-term! Both current/former Catholic workers and new folks! Can’t come in February? Call anyway… we would still love to meet you!
