A local photographer is using his skills to spread awareness of the
stories of the homeless.

John Kilene created the documentary "I Am Dorothy Day" to send a message.

Bonnie Steen had no idea she would become the focus of a documentary
when she approached the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality in Moorhead
looking to help out.

"I walked in and someone asked, 'can I help you,' and I said, 'well
yeah, I think I'm supposed to do something here, not sure what, but it
looks like you need flowers out front,'" said Dorothy Day House of
Hospitality Board of Executives member Bonnie Steen.

Steen was on the Board of Executives when John Kilene came to the
shelter with a proposition to do a documentary on the agency.

He had come up with the idea after doing some work in homeless
shelters as a Master Plumber.

"I thought with the equipment I have I could give them a voice and do
a documentary to raise awareness on the homeless," said Kilene.

The documentary begins with stories told by some of the people who
stay at the House, many of them with strong messages

"People should be going 'no, this is atrocious, this should not be
happening in America the beautiful," said Dorothy Day resident Neal in
the documentary.

All of them voiced their appreciation of the shelter.

"They teach you the life skills that I wasn't taught when I was a
child. It's easy for me to say at this moment, I am Dorothy Day," said
Dorothy Day House resident Jesse in the documentary.

It continues on with a music video featuring Bonnie planting the
flowers in front of the home and finishes off with a section that
highlights the efforts of the Dorothy Day House food pantry.

The Director of the House, Sonja Ellner, says that the video sends an
important message.

"I think the documentary serves to tell people's stories rather than
focus on some of the barriers and negative stigma," said Sonja Ellner,
Director of the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality.

And so far the documentary has been well received.

"I think on some level it touched a lot of people's hearts," said Steen.

Both the documentary and the making of the documentary prove that
there are people out there truly trying to help.

The Dorothy Day House of Hospitality has been open since 1983.

A 2009 study shows there are around 760 people who are homeless in the
FM area every year.
