Rose Quirk
Good Samaritan Adult Hero
Rose Quirk of Waterloo attended Briar Cliff College for two years
before earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from
the University of Northern Iowa. It comes as no surprise that Quirk
spends most of her free time volunteering.
In 1981, Quirk was in a faith sharing small group that wanted to do
more for the Waterloo area. They began to discuss the needs of the
city and landed upon helping the homeless.
“There is definitely a need,” Quirk said. “There are homeless people
here in Waterloo sleeping under the bridges.”
Quirk’s family donated two houses to the cause; these houses became
the Catholic Worker House. For the first two years, Quirk was the
live-in for the Catholic Worker House. She prepared meals, took care
of the house, opened her doors to anyone in need, but most of all was
a friend to all those who lived there.
From that point on, Quirk was always involved with the Catholic Worker
House. She was one of the minds behind starting Covenant Medical
Center’s once-a-month meal to Catholic Worker House, wrote letters to
organizations for funding and even helped create a GoFundMe page to
raise money to buy another house. Their goal was to raise $45,000, but
have now raised more than $73,000.
“I truly believe in the whole Catholic Worker philosophy. People open
their doors to whoever is at the door. It is really that God provides,
and I see that there. That is why I keep going back, I feel called to
that place,” Quirk said.
