Bodyguardis a 2010 Indian Malayalam-language romantic comedy film written and directed by Siddique. It stars Dileep with Nayanthara and Mithra Kurian in the lead. This film was Nayanthara's comeback to Malayalam cinema after a gap of four years, and it is the first time that Dileep had worked with Siddique. The music was composed by Ouseppachan with popular choreographer-director Prabhu Deva choreographing the song sequences. [1][2][3] Bodyguard is considered by many critics as one of the best films ever made in Malayalam cinema and developed a cult following in the years after its release even when many compared it to Hindi film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Dileep's performance was highly praised by other actors for this film.

The film revolves around young Jayakrishnan, who has a very strange habit: he adulates anyone with a trace of heroism. Whenever he develops an admiration towards a person, he prefers to move with that person as a sort of bodyguard. He starts admiring Ashokan, a former Don, Abgari, liquor tycoon and present leading businessman. Jayakrishnan wants to be Ashokan's bodyguard, but Ashokan does not need one. Jayakrishnan understood that through Warrior Sir he could approach Ashokan. Later, Jayakrishnan approaches Ashokan with a recommendation from Warrier sir. This Warrier sir is also the close friend of Jayakrishnan's father Ramankutty master, Jayakrishnan is like a son to Warrier Sir, So he got easily a letter from this Warrier sir to become Ashoka's bodyguard. Ashokan had a most respect and obligation to Warrier sir during his old days, So he cannot refuse his words. He achieves his luck after saving Ashokan from danger. Jayakrishnan thus becomes the bodyguard of Ashokan's daughter Ammu. Jayakrishnan follows Ammu to her college as her bodyguard. Ammu and her friend Sethulakshmi get irritated with him following them all day.

Jayakrishnan takes his role as a bodyguard very seriously and follows the two girls around constantly. In an attempt to get rid of him, the girls make up a "fake lover", hoping to distract Jayakrishnan from his duties as a bodyguard, and their plan works. Jayakrishnan falls in love with a "Private Number" and is constantly looking for this girl, but he has no idea that his lover is Ammu. Ammu, as a joke, calls Jayakrishnan and speaks badly about Ammu. Jayakrishnan gets a little angry and disagrees with her. He believes Ammu is a good-hearted person. That is when the viewer is able to tell that Ammu is really falling in love with Jayakrishnan.

Ammu later tells Jayakrishnan to run away with her and meet her at a railroad station. Jayakrishnan agrees, not knowing that the girl is Ammu herself. Ashokan finds out, and he believes that Jayakrishnan and Ammu are planning to run away together. In order to save Jayakrishnan's life, Ammu lies that it is not her. Jayakrishnan is meeting another girl at the station. Ashokan lets Jayakrishnan go but tells others to kill Jayakrishnan if a girl does not show up. Terrified, Ammu sends Sethulakshmi to the station and tells her to tell Jayakrishnan that Ammu is the lover and she will not be able to make it to the station. Sethulakshmi, seeing Jayakrishnan, falls in love and admits that she is the lover and not Ammu. Ammu calls her twice, but Sethulakshmi throws the cellphone out, trying to erase Ammu out of their love life completely.

Years later, after Jayakrishnan's and Sethulakshmi's marriage, she bears a son Siddharth but unfortunately dies. Before her death, she leaves a diary for her Siddharth telling the whole story between the phone calls and his father and Ammu. Siddharth later goes to Ammu's house with Jayakrishnan to visit Ashokan. Jayakrishnan is shocked that Ammu is not married. Siddharth asks Ammu to become his mother, and Jayakrishnan is shocked and angry at Siddharth for saying something so blunt and rude. Ashokan begs Jayakrishnan to take Ammu as his wife. They go onto the train together, but Siddharth runs and throws the diary into a trash can nearby. Jayakrishnan finds the diary and realizes that his real lover, the girl who has waited for him for so many years faithfully, was Ammu. The film ends with Jayakrishnan, Ammu, and Siddharth hugging each other.

Murali Krish idolises Dharmalingam, a rich powerful landlord, and at the request of his parents, he accepts to work for Dharmalingam as his bodyguard. There enters Dharmalingam's rival, who has lost his daughter since she committed suicide, the reason being rejection by Dharmalingam's son. While Murali Krish protects Dharmalingam, his rival threatens the life of his daughter Meenakshi.

Murali Krish is sent to college along with Meenakshi and her friend Ashika Gowda to protect them from the threat. Murali Krish joins the same class where Meenakshi studies, as he has previously discontinued his education. Meenakshi does not like Murali Krish following her as a bodyguard, and therefore plans to divert him. Meenakshi calls Murali Krish over his mobile phone from a private number and introduces herself as "Atha Velatant". Initially, Murali Krish hates the mobile call as it will disturb him but later on develops a liking towards Atha Velatant and slowly love blossoms for Murali Krish without knowing that it is Meenakshi herself.

At one point, Meenakshi too feels herself becoming attracted to Murali Krish and expresses her desire to meet him in person without revealing her identity. However, due to circumstances they are not able to accomplish this, and she decides to elope with Murali Krish for which he agrees, unaware it is Meenakshi. However through certain means, Muthuramalingam gets to know that Murali Krish and Meenakshi are going to run away and sends his men to stop Murali Krish. Meenakshi overhears her father's plans and decides to save Murali Krish by lying that he is in love with some other girl and has planned to elope with her. Dharmalingam spares Murali Krish, believing that Meenakshi is not his lover, but sends his men to the railway station to find out Murali Krish's lover. He also instructs that Murali Krish should be killed if there is no one in the railway station.

Meenakshi, in a desperate attempt to save Murali Krish, comes up with a plan. She requests Ashika Gowda to go to the railway station and pretend to be Atha Velatant, so that Dharmalingam's men will spare Murali Krish believing Ashika Gowda to be his lover. Meenakshi also gives a mobile phone to Ashika Gowda and informs to give it to Murali Krish when she meets him (as Murali Krish's phone is broken) so that she can reveal the truth to Murali Krish. Ashika Gowda agrees and leaves to the station. Over there, Murali Krish gets surprised seeing Ashika Gowda in the station and believes that it is Ashika Gowda who was pretending as Atha Velatant so far and hugs her. Dharmalingam's men see this and leave the place, believing that Meenakshi is not Murali Krish's lover.

Suddenly, Ashika Gowda gets a call in the mobile given by Meenakshi. Ashika Gowda understands that the call is from Meenakshi and she wants to speak to Murali Krish. To everyone's surprise, Ashika Gowda throws away the phone from train, following which it is revealed that Ashika Gowda also likes Murali Krish, and she decides to marry him by betraying Meenakshi. Meenakshi understands that Ashika Gowda has played a trick.

Several years later, Murali Krish, now a top-ranking government official, now returns to Dharmalingam's village to visit him along with his son Aravind. Dharmalingam's condition is ill. It is revealed that Ashika Gowda has died a few years back due to some medical ailments, but she has written all the truth in a diary and gives it to Aravind to read it after her death. Aravind has learnt all the truth. Ashika Gowda has also mentioned in the diary that this truth should never be disclosed to Murali Krish.

Meenakshi stays with her father, and Murali Krish gets shocked to know that Meenakshi still remains unmarried. When Murali Krish and Aravind are about to return home, Aravind asks Meenakshi to come with them and expresses his wish to call her as mother. Murali Krish berates Aravind for his suggestion and apologises to Meenakshi and Dharmalingam, but Dharmalingam also insists Meenakshi to go with Murali Krish.

Now Murali Krish, Meenakshi and Aravind leave together from the village. Just the before the train starts, Aravind runs out to throw the diary containing the truth in a dust bin and comes back, but Murali Krish takes back the diary from the dust bin without Aravind's knowledge and reads it. Upon reading the diary, Murali Krish is shocked knowing that it was Meenakshi who loved him in the name of Atha Velatant. In the end, Murali Krish also whole heartedly accepts Meenakshi.

Siddique first narrated the script of Bodyguard to Vijay. As Vijay had prior commitments then, he suggested making this movie first in Malayalam as Bodyguard. He later announced his decision to remake the film with enhancements in the script to better suit the Tamil audience.[citation needed] The film was initially referred to as Kaavalkaaran, which literally means "bodyguard" in Tamil. After rumours of the title being changed to Kaaval Kaadhal, the film was officially confirmed to be titled Kaavalan in August 2010.[6] The reason for the name confusion and its eventual permanent change was due to complications in obtaining the rights to the title of Kavalkaran from M. G. Ramachandran's producers. They refused to sell the title to Vijay, leading to the rechristening of the title to Kaavalan.[7]

An incident occurred on set in April, where Asin, her father, and her makeup assistants fainted in their caravan after being exposed to a gas leak. They were treated in hospital the same day and were eventually discharged.[9][10]

The second shoot schedule occurred in Vellore. Vijay and Asin, along with director Siddique and the rest of crew filmed at the Vellore Institute of Technology. A song was shot at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
