"How many people out there are recording with primarily instruments
rather than programmed synths, etc.?"

So far just guitar and voice. I think the concept I'm using lends itself to this type of music. I have one track that I am very very proud of. The rest is acceptable. I may add fake drums etc as time permits to a track or two, but I'm liking how the album is held together so far. It is interesting to see the choices in arrangement etc because of the time limit. I had plans to do more elaborate recordings, but now I've focused on getting 30 minutes of comparatively decent music done in the simplest manner and if/when that is accomplished embellishing later. I'm sure that won't happen but you never know.

Most all of what I'm doing involves programming sequencers and synths and what not.. but I do plan to sneak some guitar playing in there somewhere..

I've got guitar, vocals, drums, and programmed bass. I'd play bass, but
I don't have one! My singing is bad, but what are you going to do?
It's got to be a solo album! Finally recorded the drums for most of the
tracks on Friday -- and that was a big psychological step forward.
Finally starting to feel near the end...

mine is all samples and programmed drums, synths. I began the month
working on guitar songs too, but everything that came out sounded like
something my band would play. I wanted my solo album to be a departure
from the band, as well as much of what I have done solo or with other
bands in the past.

So this one is electronic. I've decided against overdubbing vocals and
guitar. I've used a couple of cheesy voice samples and I may try
sampling some recordings of my own voice. I'm also working on using a
speech reader to capture vocals, to keep it all in the computerized
vein.

I have 8+ tracks that will comprise the album, four of those are
complete. There are another four that I have every intention of
completing and another one or two that may or may not make the cut.
Run time is somewhere around 31 minutes.

lol, that's awesome,.. I can't sing ether.. I've been thinking of getting software to help me fake it.. but it doesn't fit into my budget quiet yet, let alone nice mics and pres.. so most of what I'm doing is instrumental.. accept.. I'm playing with a vocal synthesizer.. which is one of the big question marks...

I've got one track that's built around the vocals.. That I have a synth standing in for.. then I gotta figure out how to export the midi file, import it into Cantor.. and program the whole vocal performance thing.. and hope it sorta works.. I'll probably have to do a lot EQing just to keep the frequency space open..

I wrote out the lyrics for it, rather randomly, on twitter. Then a friend of mine started responding on face book. Back in the day we'd write poetry by passing the note book around.. everybody gets a line or two.. and anyway.. so we got more crazy lyrics that kinda way. The second half of the lyrics will have to wait for the none-solo album.. but..

And then I got one of them free open source speech synthesis programs.. I've got about a sentence of that.. processed the hell out of it, put it in ReCycle.. and using it inside of Reason.. It has a kind of crazy rough edged, sorta low fi textural quality to it.. and it's performance becomes about.. ambiguity really..

That plus field recording type stuff creates whatever explicit sorta "what this music / album might be about" stuff. Not having all the pieces finished, I don't yet know what it's about, lol.. but it could be about dealing with my mom's passing.. last year she was in the hospital while the NaSoAlMo thing was going on.. and it was like.. something to focus on when I was going a little crazy.. and then she died in December. So it's just a weird time of year for me now.

Definitely all synthesized instruments for me; I can't play anything, but I can click and drag little boxes in a sequencer grid like a real pro!

I can't sing worth a damn either, but that's not stopping me from trying on at least two of my tracks.  For the purposes of November, I'm focusing more on songwriting than on performance or production: figure out the lyrics, record a *very* rough take of myself singing them, and move on to the next task.  Once the month is over, I'll worry about obsessively re-recording each line and applying the obligatory Studio Magic(TM).  Consider that a warning to anybody who'll be listening to my album at the end of the month: get ready for some 100% raw, ear-curdling vocals!

My current progress: five tracks (three "finished", two still in-progress), totalling 23:47.  Morale is high; I've moved passed the stage where I'm worried about reaching my goal on time, and can focus on putting together a strong finish!

Hey, it's your music so sing it!!! F those people that don't like it. People said Bob Dylan couldn't sing either.
