Hey Everyone...

My name is Jeff Gibson.  I've been developing software since I received my Computer Science degree back in 1991 at LSU in Shreveport, LA.  I have been working as an independent contractor for the last 14 years.  Most of my work has been in vertical market applications.  I've aimed myself as being an ISV style company.  Love learning new technologies and trying to stretch myself.  The majority off my work has been in Sybase's PowerBuilder and SQL Anywhere since 1995.  I have also worked with a product called Omnis Studio.  Also worked with MSSQL Server, MySQL, SQLite, and have also been delving into C#, since it tends to syntactically be very close to how your write code in PowerBuilder.

This work keeps me extremely busy, but I've been wanting to start to get my head wrapped around web development methodologies, etc.  Simple things from building data bound forms on a webpage to OO development on the code side.  From what I have seen there seems to be some really powerful stuff you can do with PHP, and the multitude of tools that work with it.  My goal would be to really want to come into this group so I can get my arms wrapped around the basic architecture of how all the tools work together, how to write event driven code in a stateless environment, etc.  Basically want to see what I can do to untrain myself somewhat from the basic principles of desktop applications to web based applications.

To be fair though, I've never been a developer that through that baby out with the bath water.  And when web development because very prominent in the late 90's before the dot com bust, I kept in mind that the web was another tool in the tool box.  And while tons of developers were running out trying to redevelop their applications to run on the web only, we kept our apps running on the desktop, and even moved some of them into the smart client arena, in order to take advantage of some of their deployment models.  So if a client comes to me and says "We want to write an application on the web", my first question is always "OK....  Why".  Most of the time they can't even answer the question.  And their only answer tends to be that they want that because that's what they have heard everybody else does.

Is there room for web apps.  ABSOLUTELY!!!  And this is the main reason why I want to jump deeper into this (instead of farming the work out).  I want to be able to develop this myself as well as fully understand it.

I look forward to meeting everybody at the next meeting!!!
