I am one of several thousand people who subscribes to Dish Network in
and around the Nashville area. I actually live about 2 1/2 to 3 hours
from Nashville. I live in Union City, TN. My network channels are the
Nashville based affiliates. WKRN the ABC affiliate has reportedly
refused to provide Dish Network with the signal needed to broadcast the
channel. What I know of the matter is what I have been told by Dish on
the channel where I would usually view ABC. They say that the company
that owns the affiliate is asking an unprecedented amount for the signal
and rights to broadcast the channel. They also say that this is a
leverage move against Dish to force them to offer a some channel in Los
Angeles. Because of the inconvenience Dish is providing all of the
other affiliates for free until the matter is settled. They are also
offering at no charge an antennae that will give their customers access
to the channel. If professional installation is necessary a discounted
fee of $49.00 must be paid by the customer.

Until this thing is settled, will an outdoor antenna pull in a decent signal
from the ABC affiliate in Jackson? I've never bothered subscribing to the local
package that Dish Network offers, because they do not provide our WB and UPN
stations. In Nashville, you either have to subscribe to Intermedia or use an
external antenna to receive channels 13, 24, 26, 28, 30, 36, 50, 58, and 66.

Last year, WTVF denied permission to broadcast Channel 5 in an attempt to force
Dish Network to carry cable channel 5+. They reached agreement only after it
became obvious that Dish would not comply with their demands.

What about 14, 39, 52, and 61<g>.

Actually to my knowledge 13, 24, and 26 aren't on Intermedia. Neither is 36
but it's a 100% relay of 50 which is.

Channel 7 in Jackson does have a pretty good signal. With a simple rooftop
antenna I get them just about every day here in Cheatham Co., about 100
miles northeast. Channel 3 in Carbondale, Ill. also comes in most of the
time - they, too, are a lot closer to you.

WKRN's owners own (IIRC) KCAL channel 9 in Los Angeles, the only completely
unaffiliated VHF station in the market. My guess is that's the station
they're trying to get wider coverage for. They also bought channel 11 in
San Jose & are trying to convert it to San Francisco's NBC affiliate, a move
which is costing them a LOT of money.

Actually, from Union City, you should be able to pull in ABC 24 from
WPTY in Memphis. If you like late nite ABC however, you are out of luck with
them, they carry a WB schedule after 11PM.
I live about 4 miles from Channel 7's transmitter so they have never
been a problem for me to recieve. They have improved a great deal in the
last few years, especially in the local news area.

Actually. if you like ABC's non-primetime schedule, WKRN is one of the worst
stations. They don't carry Politically Incorrect or BaBa WaWa's show (at
least in their regular time slots) due to contract spats w/ABC.

But they are finally broadcasting in stereo.....

I live in Humboldt but live in MADISON co (Jackson). I hve Dish Network
I cannot subscribe to the Nashville locals. I get them out of NEW YORK
and it SUCKS. I don't care about seeing all that Crime on my news.
I want NASHVILLE locals. NBC CBS. I do get Jackson ABC.
What pees me off is I have a friend down the road 1 mile and he gets
the Nashville channels. Iam upgrading to the DISH 500 TOMORROW
in hopes I can finagle with them to get it.
I was going to have me old DISH pointed to the 61.5 Satellite when
HDTV comes as I do have a HDTV big screeN tv.
I scrapped it today after the DN tech said wait it will be awhile before
that HDTV happens. They have 1 HBO and SHOW.
I will put that money in a OTA as Memphis will start HDTV in March 02

Fatdaddy, I do know what you mean! I had Dish Network for a while too. I
got sick of seeing Syracuse football on Saturdays and New England football
on Sundays with that dang New York CBS affiliate. I solved my problem by
purchasing an antenna at the local Western Auto and gave Dish Network the
heave ho. BTW, Dish informed me that we would not be eligible for the
Nashville stations. Instead they informed me I'd have to wait for the
Memphis stations to be brought on board.
I'm not sure what length of time you have been in the area, but do you
remember when NYPD Blue first came on and the local ABC affiliate(Ch7)
refused to air it? I wore the station manager out for much of the first
season. I had to end up getting my brother in the next county who could get
ABC on Dish to tape it for me.

There isn't much high-definition programming being produced. (I think
Monday Night Football is but don't know about much else)
Standard-definition digital will be a significant improvement over analog
though.

I would be surprised if there are no OTA digital signals in Nashville by the
end of July. (of this year) WTVF's antenna is already up though I'm not
seeing any signs of DTV signals on their channel yet.

CBS has a few programs in HD. They have a list of them as well as a list
of CBS affiliate stations that broadcast them. The list is at
<http://www.cbs.com/hdtv/>. I think I also heard that the Discovery
Channel was to become High-Def very soon.

While you're in the process of getting them to switch you, cruise on
over to FBI.gov and get a Uniformed Crime Report and look at it. Then
tell me which town has a higher per capita crime rate.
