I remember thanking God in the 7th grade that I hadn't been made to
take Latin because all the smart girls could be seen sweatin' a test
in the hall before class. Then there was Mrs. Simpson's Ancient
History...which I now feel strangely a part of.

How about snow? Like a really good snow. The sledding hills from
Chickering Rd. to Sneed to that big long hill right near Sneed....
can't think of it. I think it starts with a "T". It's a wonder we made
it down that one in one piece! Summer was at the club in Belle Meade.
Boone Brothers and a guy named Sterling kept the lifegaurds busy. How
is Boone? Anyone know?

-as a youngster, I remember FORT FRIGHTLY. After a filling up a dance
card, and 'box stepping' the night away, we would rush over to Baskin
Robbins where our moms would pick us up
-as a 'tween', I remember thinking Lions Head was the BOMB---and being
annoyed that my mother bought all my clothes at the super preppy 'Top
Drawer' when I wanted to wear nothing but Benetton. The Benetton was
in the old Green Hills Mall across from food court (does anyone
remember the baked potato eatery? so much butter & sour cream and I
thought it was AWESOME). I got my ears pierced at the top of the
escalator there, but have forgotten the name.
--As a teen, I loved Starwood and Charlie Daniels Band Jam. I remember
everyone stacking up their paper cups and lighting them on fire. These
'torches' were for when Skynrd played Free Bird and we all sang along.
I also remember "Carl's Carload" when you could get an entire car
filled with people into Starwood to see a band like Steppenwolf for a
few bucks...

Is that the Donut Den's pic? That was just a slight while back.
Everyone hung out before school there. I remember meeting on Fri/Sat
nights at the Mickey D's on Hillsboro Rd. to see what all was going on
for the night. (Of course the story at home before we'd leave was,"
I'll be at Sally's". & her story was," I'll be at Mary Beth's)

Remember Spatz restaurant and H.G. Hills in Hillsboro Village? Ice
skating at the old Ice Centennial! The caboose in Centennial Park! And
no one dared to down on lower Broad! And yes I too remember the pizza
place under SATCO. I was such a nerd and never tried to get alcohol,
but my friends did.

Wow - this brings back memories? I remember when City Hall in Franklin
was actually a mall - we didn't have to drive to Green Hills or
Hickory Hollow! We would roller skate in the mall parking lot on
Sundays when it was closed.
--When Lower Broad was nothing more than pawn shops, hookers, and
honkey tonks.
--When 2nd Avenue was a 'cool, alternative' place to hang out/shop.
--Arguing over whether to go to Opryland or the Wave Pool on hot
summer days.
--Of course, Friday night skating in Brentwood and then Red Geranium
pizza.
--Skipping school in the Spring to go see the cool concerts outside at
Vandy - well, I HEARD that people did that :)

I remember Shakey's Pizza in Green Hills, where we got to watch the
pizzas being made in the big glass window. I had my 6th birthday party
there. Other cool hangouts include Charlotte Skating Rink, skating to
the "S-A- TUR- DAY, Night!" song, seeing Sylvester Stallone at Tempos
after a football game one night, and cruising around Love Circle.

I remember all the concerts downtown, when downtown was truly a dive.
Getting into Cantrell's at 16, easy, all the club's, guys who worked
at Cat's, remember the cool mural on the ceiling at the hot dog place
at Rivergate mall? Charlie Daniel's band jam concert, where I saw Ted
Nugent a bunch of times and spent the night at the Hyatt with my
parents while it snowed

We lived in an apartment complex very near the old Belle Meade Theater
when they did the premiere of Coal Miner's Daughter. We stared out the
window to watch all the limousines.
Also I saw E.T. there and either the second or third Star Wars movie.

We saw Van Cliburn in concert before TPAC had been opened, and we got
to go backstage (it was a special treat for my younger brother's
birthday...I forget if it was his 3rd, 4th or 5th. We were so
starstruck by meeting Van Cliburn...not necessarily because of the
Moscow Competition, or his piano skills, or anything like that, but
because HE KNEW MR. ROGERS. To two preschoolers/kindergarteners, that
was the height of accomplishment. We were so thrilled having met
someone who'd actually appeared on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood! And he
promised to say hello to Mr. Rogers for us!

My HS buddy's family owned Burger Chef on Nolensville Rd.. We took a
bunch of frozen burgers from there to Panama City, and wound up with a
giant disgusting meatball that nearly killed all of us. Made for some
good eatin' when washed down with a nice Florida warm temp can o' Cost
Cutter beer from Kroger, though. Any discussion of Southwinds happen
on here yet? The expression "shooting fish in a rain barrel" comes to
mind to describe that place.

You all have come up with some great stuff! The Glass Onion reference
brings back some great memories. I remember sneaking out in high
school on a week night to see Guadalcanal Diary at Nashville Center
Stage (no longer but was in the sketch side of the river near Titans
stadium). Maryland Farms Racquet and Country Club (eating at Wicker
Basket restaurant) before YMCA bought it. I remember jumping off the
platforms at night (after hours) at Maryland Farms...quite a thrill.
My parents' first night in Nashville was spent at the Loveless Motel
when it was still a motel. Nice! Melrose Lanes and Golden Rail and
Cue. Mr. Gattis in Green Hills. Oh wait...Shakey's Pizza in Green
Hills was way back. "One for the Sun" at the Amphitheater. Good Times!

I also remember going to visit my cousins in Tuscaloosa BEFORE I-65
was built and having to take Franklin or Hillsboro Roads all the way
to Birmingham! Also, doing race car laps in my car around Harpeth
Hall's track before it became a track and field surface.

Clockhammer and Wishcraft took over Belmont House (well, not Guilt),
when Fr. Ryan High School was on Elliston Place, when Obie's Pizza had
tables you could carve in, when Moskow's was the best place to buy
clove cigarettes. I also remember the Glass Onion, the Cannery, 328
Performance Hall, Dragon Park, Flagpole Hill, the City Without a
Subway album and the White Roach! One of the things (out of many) I
can't remember is what The End was called in all its previous
incarnations.

I remember when at Christmas time there was a life sized nativity
scene that spanned the length of the Parthenon. It had lights and
music playing and made me feel like I was in a magical place. I

I remember....McLellans? field at Ensworth, hanging out late-night in
houses still under construction in Sugartree....the parking lot of the
Lion's Head Wendy's... some place we went in Bandywood to play
Frogger.....shouting the lyrics to songs by the Violent Femmes while
being driven around during "rush" for SAP....this does make you feel
ancient:)

Anyone remember Tater Junction in Green Hills Mall?? I also have
really fond memories of Mills Bookstore. I spent many hours there. How
about the downtown public library? The billards place on West End? I
think there is a bank there now. The Dragon Park was the place to hang
out for awhile at night. And smoking the behind the Lion's Head
theater! So many memories!

I also remembered buying singles at the Record Barn by Kroger's in
Green Hills where the mall is now.
Spending hours at the Green Hills Game Room and then hanging out in
the Kroger parking lot.
I remember when the GreenHouse was actually a place that you could buy
plants and not jagerbombs.
Saying "Good Evening Mrs. Hutchison" before Ft. Nightly and HATING it
because I was scared no one would ask me to dance.
Going up to Love Circle for the view
Deborah's mom letting us sneak a few sips of her white zinfandel and
then dancing on the flashing dance floor at Tempo's.
How can you forget Madame Fifi? I've really considered being a Madam
Fifi in the past few years because Nashville needs it and I'm just
whack enough that I would enjoy it.

I remember when Henpeck was an actual country gas station owned by a
guy name smiley who used to give me grape nehi's and chocolate bars...
When Hickory Hollow was the only mall besides the outdoor strip called
Green Hills, the only target was in Antioch, Battle Ground Academcy
was actuall located near a real battleground and Al Gore was in TN
inventing the internet...
I also remember when downtown Franklin had a hooker on main street and
they filmed Senn Penn's At Close Range through town..
I remember Nashville/Franklin when Dotson's furniture was new...

Jones Pet Shop had a monkey in a cage? And remember when Green Hills
Mall was more like a strip mall and Hickory House had free samples of
Summer Sausage? Who remembers Mills Bookstore? Every school book I
bought from 1st to 12th grade, I got there. Thank you for this page!

I'm no native Nashvillean, but since you invited me, Kathy, I'll tell
you what I saw as a newcomer: I arrived in 1984 from Seattle, a fact
which meant I was called "Yankee" more than once. As I recall, Jimmy
Pickle had a rebel flag displayed in the back window of his car, which
was new to me. My first square burger at Krystal's. (Was that the
name?) The Cotton Patch, Bandywood. The arrival of oh so sophisticated
Haagen Dazs. Clove cigarettes. Sorority honks. My first grits. Add-a-
bead necklaces. San Antonio Taco Company. Selling Krispy Kreme donuts
to Vandy fraternities on a weekend morning. Curly fries at that place
near that movie theatre (help me out here! My memory is flagging).

ever take you shopping at Rich-Schwartz? How much did I love the tiny
girls' room with its tiny fixtures? How about The Jewel Medley in
Bandywood? When it still had cobble streets? Riding my bike around
Green Hills, and there was hardly any traffic. Buying Icees at the
Kwik Sak on Richard Jones Road. Jolly Ranchers at the Purple Cow.
Walking around Burton Farm and wondering why the old slave quarters
were filled to the rafters with office furniture. Remember the creek
there? Opryland. The Games Store. Belle Meade Theatre. Green Hills
Theatre, where Grace's is now. Buying Madeline L'Engle books at Davis-
Kidd, across the street. Prom dresses from LaRawn's. Making fake IDs
in GG's basement and then going to have our first drinks in a
bar...Amy's. Jonsey's. The Urban Lounge.
