yesterday during the pursuit of a stolen car at the Mt. Juliet exit on
Interstate 40.

About 10 p.m. Tuesday, Fallon Tallent, 21, knocked on the door of the
Maryville home of her ''grandma.''
Lucille Tallent was accustomed to the young woman's visits at all
hours.
''She's not my biological kin, but we share the Tallent name, and I've
always claimed her as my granddaughter,'' said the older woman.
This time Fallon Tallent needed gas money for a trip to Nashville to
see her parole officer, she explained.
''I gave her $10. It was all I had,'' the older woman said.
As Lucille Tallent now knows, and laments, the younger woman never
reached Nashville. In Wilson County, authorities said, Fallon Tallent
was behind the wheel of a stolen Mercedes-Benz that slammed into a
county sheriff's patrol car yesterday, killing sheriff's deputy John
Musice and Mt. Juliet police Sgt. Jerry Mundy.
The wreck ended a 40-mile chase through three counties and reached
speeds of more than 100 mph. The car had been stolen Tuesday in
Maryville, police said.
Injured in the crash was a passenger in the Mercedes, Dorothy Cash,
33, of Knoxville. Little information was available yesterday about
Cash, including her relationship to Tallent. Cash is in Vanderbilt
University Medical Center. Tallent is being held in the Wilson County
Jail.
''I just learned of it when I got home from work,'' said Lucille
Tallent, who works in the dietary department of a Maryville nursing
home.
''I'll be honest. I'm just sort of shook up. I can't believe it's
happened.''
She said that when Fallon Tallent stopped by her house Tuesday, the
younger woman appeared happy but in a hurry. ''She just said, 'We've
got to go,' '' the older woman remembered, adding that she did not
know what type of car the young woman was driving or whether anyone
was with her.
At the same time, the older woman described Fallon Tallent as ''no
stranger to trouble.''
''She was raised up in a bad situation. We've done what we could for
her over the years, but it didn't do any good,'' Lucille Tallent said
in a phone interview from her Gillenwater Road home in Maryville.
She said the younger woman never lived with her at her home and had
been in state custody many times from the age of 14 until she was 18,
primarily at a state-run home for delinquents in Nashville. ''She got
her GED while she was there,'' she said.
A spokesman for the Department of Children's Services could not be
reached for comment or corroboration.
''She had been in trouble,'' the older woman said.
Indeed, Fallon Tallent did have a record, including Davidson County
charges of auto theft in March, court records show.
When a Metro officer tried to pull her over for questioning, records
indicate, the young woman sped up to about 95 mph and began weaving in
and out of Interstate 40 traffic.
In the chase, she led authorities into Wilson County, the same county
where she wrecked yesterday, an officer's affidavit said. Near
Lebanon, she yielded to the flashing blue lights chasing her.
Besides auto theft, she was charged with evading arrest and driving
with a revoked license. All of those charges were pending when she was
arrested yesterday, court records indicate.
It was unclear whether the 21-year-old woman was really coming to
Nashville for a meeting with a probation officer.
Lucille Tallent said her ''heart was broken'' for the families of the
officers who were killed, Musice, 49, and Mundy, 43.
''I feel for the families. Yes, I do,'' she said.
''I just can't believe this has happened. I tried to help the girl,
but sometimes all you do just isn't enough. I don't know what else to
say.''
Her eyes brim with tears, she said, as she recalls her adopted
granddaughter's parting words Tuesday night.
''She hugged me and kissed me and said, 'Grandma, I love you,' and
that was the last I saw of her.''

Okay, first thought here: don't people know that when they give
their exotic soap-opera character names, it's the equivalent of an
80k watt Las Vegas sign that reads: "trailer park trash?"
Other than that, the local sensationalist TV news ran earlier
police videotapes of her previous arrests and background.
Juvi hall at age 15. Although I doubt the sentence would
be available, this looks like a case where the death
penalty would almost be a mercy killing.

No newspaper or TV news report that I saw mentioned that she was white. I
saw her on the TV news coverage and saw her picture in the paper. That's how
I knew she was white.

My point exactly. USUALLY, white perps are identified and blacks are
hidden. This has been going on since the 1950s because of pressure by

Second, you are full of shit. I graduated from J-school a full 15
years ago, and even then we were consistently trained not to mention
race unless it's relevant. In most cases it's not. Routinely
indentifying figures in the media by race has been passe for many,
many years.
If you have a recent example of race being identified when it wasn't
1) relevant, as in the case of a wanted criminal or other
missing-person case, or 2) in a racist whacko publication, please pass
it along.

Well... I know this is going to go over like a lead balloon but....
She couldn't have aimed at the cops.. they were on the otherside of the
car.. apparently trying to sheild themselves from the
wreck that they knew was going to happen when you blow out 2 front tires on
a car thats travelling 100 miles an hour.
Where are all the outraged people over the fact that the cops were trying to
commit murder themselves? And, after looking at the diagram in the paper,
she wasn't aiming at anyone. She swerved to miss the strip.. hit the car,
and the car acted in a manner not unlike a pinball machine flipper throwing
the officers a good 20-30 feet. Just like swatting a pinball. The fact they
were on the otherside of the car shows that they were aware that it would
most likely cause an accident. I am not sorry for that reason. If they had
been in a bike parade for children or doing something for charity and got
killed..yes it would have been a terrible accident.. but when you get taken
out trying to take the life of someone else... I fail to draw the line at
one persons life being more important than the others. One of the oficers
was asked to stop being on the road and take an
inside job.. he declined.. saying he loved doing what he was doing..
writing traffic tickets..? Trying to cause a fatal accident?
Yeah... it's always bad when someone gets killed on the job but what about
the crack dealers? No one cries about it when they get killed. What about
the car-theives and bank robbers? No one cares. They say it's done in "the
publics intrest, or for the state" ..well.. I didn't want the girls killed.
Cops either.. But, I guess in this case it was a prime example of "Payback
being a M.F."

I have read that before. I also have heard many of my black associates refer
to uneducated street blacks as "dumb niggers"
and say how they are always the ones on tv rioting, looting, and commiting
crime, while the majority of the AA's are just trying to get by like
everyone else. As always.. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" or I guess
the Gov. handouts and the press.

I have worked with several "rednecks" that would be offended by the
stereotypical representation of them. In fact it is quite prejudicial to
refer to someone as a redneck, and is no more acceptable than the term
Nigger, Spic, Gook , Southern Baptist, or Star Trek fan. In fact, to refer
to someone in such terms would be disgraceful from a southern gentleman such
