Waking Nightmares

October 27, Four Days from the Death of Nashville

Spooky photo“It is not usually in our particular group’s manner to interact with the Pentacles –” Autumn Delacroix let the pregnant pause emphasize her next words, “not that that there is any allegiance to the Exarchs or those who would follow them either.” The short, slender vampire of the sixth tower regarded her fellow mage with dead eyes. Quite literally dead eyes, if what was known of the Tremere was true.

Lady Elenor considered the news that Autumn brought. From what she gathered, a member of the local dead had been dabbling in some kind of space sympathy. Something outside of her specialties, but that neatly confirmed some of what she had been seeing for awhile.

“The lines of Fate are – I can not explain – somehow chewed upon across the city. It is as if something is eating them, literally stealing the future of this entire region away. I sense a few others walking across the web without being caught, but whatever it is, it has punched a tiny gap into the fallen world, and is stealing away the city itself.”

“Have you been to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, my Lady?” Delacroix leaned in, her black eyes dilating to watch for any reaction, either in the Lie or Truth.

“I don’t recall having heard of any place of that name, and I know all of Nashville like…” Lady Elenor paused, leaning back, looking deep in thought, but actually probing the pattern of Fate and reality around her.

“I remember! It has been stolen!” Elenor exclaimed. “Not hidden, but removed from this world! And if it has been removed to the Supernal, I can not see the tracks.”

“My friends, they have different ways, and they are sure it has been taken by this thing they call a Fae, a creature of myth. Something that does not suffer the Lie, although they would not say it that way. They would say a very many things differently.” Delacoix stood. “This city took us in when many others would not. It is something of a special place to us. I would prefer it not be destroyed. They are aware of the issues, and can bring some things to the table that might prove beneficial.”

Lady Elenor’s reply was cut off by the briefest of taps on the door followed by it opening.

“There is a problem.” The woman in the teal hijab ignored the vampire in their midst. She addressed Elenor directly.

“The Spirits of Nashville are less than they were. In number, I mean. The diversity and simple count. We have gone on three surveys, and do not know what it means.”

Delacroix dryly remarked to Elenor, “It would appear all aspects of Nashville are being stolen away.”

Elenor stood and spoke with a strong, determined voice, “Fate is being wound up and taken away, Spirits are slowly disappearing. I fear this means dire things for this city.”

Taqqiaa turned her head to the side, almost facing away, as if listening. The hijib hid her expression, but her voice was tinged with fear. “With these aspects being taken, we have to deal with two things: the direct effect of their loss, but also the secondary effects. We are not the only ones who are aware of such things.”

As if in response, the lone, high note of a wolf’s howl rose over the city.
