I decided to go ahead and start this thread in case anyone else wants to share tips and tricks for increasing developer productivity/joy.

If anyone (still) uses firefox and wants the wider, monospaced github that David demoed:

Install the Stylish addon.  Add a new style with this content.

In the interest of full disclosure:

That script may be more trouble than it's worth. It will certainly require tweaking in the event github changes their css. I may only end up keeping the bits that monospace the font on all of the text areas.

Dave, what were the sound tracks you listed in your presentation (video game music)?

Personally, I like the Borderlands 2 soundtrack. It's on spotify.

Music can actually distract me. The only one that hasn't has been Tron Legacy soundtrack. Perhaps instrumental is the ticket.

Oh yea, that is a good one as well. Post rock is good too. Specifically, Explosions in the Sky or U137.

careful - this is close to becoming a holy war.

That being said, trance and dubstep without lyrics are by far the best ;-)

Jim,

One of the sound tracks he listed was the Dust soundtrack.  It's a pretty awesome game too

I'm with Greg, I mostly don't listen to music. It can distract me, because it influences my mood too much and I focus on it (except when I'm very tired, and I cannot focus well). Lately I discovered "Two Steps From Hell", occasionally listened to them. They produce epic soundtracks (full orchestra, and often chorus), basically if you hear battle music in super hero movies, there's a chance it's from them.
Otherwise I move in wide range, and have favorites in electronic music (dream/uplifting trance or happy hardcore also), or heavy metal. All depends on the mood.

I saw the message from Azul Systems, that conference looks great, I'm jealous.

Did anyone step up formally on meetup.com, so they won't shut down the account? (I don't understand why would meetup do that though, but the warning said it).

Here are the soundtracks that I mentioned:
For what it's worth, I also thought the games were both very good to play also!

Dust was actually done almost entirely by one guy - Dean Dodrill. He's an illustrator who learned C# and XNA programming just to make the game.  He didn't do all the voice acting or music, but he did all of the artwork and programming...  Wow, inspiring!

Man I've used the heck out of the spaces hotkeys you mentioned. I've really been loving that.

I also installed a vim emulator for firefox yesterday, which I feel like has sped me up (although I've seen people work wonders with the mouse when browsing the internet). If anyone is comfortable with vim I would highly recommend it. It's called VimFX. Chrome has a similar one called Vimium.

Hey all --

The custom Github Chrome extension that I demonstrated in the presentation is now up on Github.  The readme includes instructions on setting it up - since it's not available in the Chrome store, you have to load it up in Developer Mode.  If you have any trouble with it, just let me know.  And naturally, if you build anything on top of it, feel free to issue a pull request to share it with everyone else.

Have fun!

One of my workers told me to check out the soundtrack for FEZ.  If you like the ones Dave mentioned, this one is pretty good too.

Hey all.  I didn't post the slides this time, but there was some interest in at least sharing some of the links to resources.  There weren't a ton, but here they are.

Hacking Web Apps

Window Organization

Teams & Timeboxes

Have fun!

Last week I gave a presentation at SpringOne on Spring Data REST. You can see the slides here => https://speakerdeck.com/gregturn/springone2gx-2014-spring-data-rest-data-meets-hypermedia. I'm trying to find a window when I could give a similar talk to NJUG.

If you'll agree not to hate on me for the playlists you don't like, you can find quite a few I've built and pulled from others on spotify user jeremy1230 that range from classical to acoustic to dub and electronic and everything in-between. My tastes tend to ebb and flow with the season and project. I'll definitely be building a few more out of what's been shared so far. Some good recommendations in here.
