Hello!
I'm pretty new to the UAV world and have just purchased a Blade Quadcopter.  Anyone else out there having fun with their UAV?  Are there other UAV groups in NH to join?
Looking to learn all I can!

Yes, I finally got around to getting them up but just haven't had as much time to get out. If you're around the Hollis area, I usually fly around there. Which Blade model? I'm glad you started out with something smaller to learn on.

It's the Blade 180.  In doing some research I thought it would be a good first copter.  I really enjoy flying it but have yet to get out into the wide open and play around with it.  What do you fly?  I'm from the Seacoast area.

I have a Blade Nano QX for practicing indoors, a Nemesis 240 sized quad for my fun FPV flying in smaller spaces and for portability, and a TBS Disco with a Pixhawk for bigger flying and getting good video/picture shots.

Nice!  Sounds like a great setup.  Does the TBS Discovery have FPV?  Sometime in the next year I'd like to upgrade UAVs to something that can handle a bigger camera.  But I'd also like it to have FPV.  Would you suggest your TBS Disco?  There's tons of options out there, it's hard to know what to look for.

Yes, it has FPV gear set up on it and works fine, granted I'm waiting on new goggles to come in. Getting everything set for each flight can be a pain as I don't use an OSD to transmit my HAM call sign but I think I have something in place that works quite well.
The Disco is nice and I like it as there is plenty of room to do whatever you want but it can get pricey outfitting it all.

Curious, what do you use instead of the OSD to transmit the call sign?

I have my call sign on various gear I use so when I turn the transmitter on, I point it at the call sign so its visible and the same when I land and power down. You're supposed to show it at the start, end, and every 10 minutes. My quads don't really fly more than 10 minutes so that is sufficient for me. I have an OSD for my plane that stays up longer so I don't have to land every 10 minutes.

Sounds like a good system to have.
So I lost my Blade 180 this past weekend.  I thought I was ready to take it outside and things were going well till I went above the tree line and the wind took hold of it.  I searched for a couple hours, met a couple nice neighbors abutting the property I was flying it on but came up empty handed.  I gave the neighbors my number, hopefully it will turn up somehow.  I realize now that maybe I should have put some kind of GPS tracking device on it.  Any suggestions?

Yeah, generally flying above the treeline isn't a good idea unless it's a larger vehicle. I had a friend who lost a quad as well doing the same thing and another who almost lost an Ultra Micro Cub flying over his house.
There are several alternatives, some of which are more expensive than others, but a GPS tracker is an idea. For something so small though, I probably wouldn't have put one on it.
I use FrSky receivers and a Taranis transmitter and get RSSI signals from them. As long as the battery didn't get ejected, I can use the signal strength to get closer to where the vehicle is should I lose it. That's one, simple, built-in solution I use. If you have telemetry with GPS on it like with the Pixhawk, then you can use the logs to check where it might have gone down as long as it didn't fly away.
Sorry about the loss.

Yeah, it sucks.  I've also been looking at bluetooth tracking devices.  I'm not really sure I'll need it though, I think I've learned my lesson.  Thanks for the advice.  I think I'm going to pick up another Blade 180 BNF and use the cheap RC that came with the first Blade I bought.  What stinks too is losing the micro SD.  I think I had a pretty good sunset video on it.
