Balancing Technical Excellence with Business Value
Good developers love to code and good business people have a knack for making money. Often times these two groups are at odds with developers thinking that "the business" just doesn't understand good design and business owners thinking those crazy developers don't get how we make money. This back of forth can create a lack of trust and a good deal of friction that can waste time and money. How can we help both sides see the value of the other? How can we work together to make sure we achieve a good balance of both? In this session, we review the intrinsic values from both software engineers and business stakeholders and how they can seem to conflict. We cover approaches for making technical decisions based on their overall value to the company and how best to convey the value of these decisions to stakeholders. Since there are times when you may have to make less than optimal technical choices to meet immediate business needs, we will talk about ways to actively manage your technical debt. Lastly we outline methods for balancing technical and business decisions in a transparent and collaborative manner.
