Theology in Arabic

Seminar Series

Join Georgetown’s Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies for our ongoing Theology in Arabic seminars. These seminars are intended to foster a deeper understanding of theology directly from works in Classical Arabic:

***********************************************

  • "Patristic Quotations in Miaphysite and East-Syrian Arab Authors: The Case of Ephrem the Syrian."

    Wednesday, April 3, 12:15 pm EST/18:15PM
  • via Zoom

Dr. Bishara Ebeid, Researcher at Ca' Foscari University of Venice

Abstract: In my presentation I aim to examine the quotation of Ephrem the Syrian by Miaphysite and East-Syrian authors writing in Arabic, namely Abū Rāʾṭah al-Takrītī (9th cen.), Yaḥyā b. ʿAdī (10th cen.), Severus b. al-Muqaffaʿ (10th cen.), Sabirīšūʿ b. Būlūs (12th cen.) and Ṣalība al-Mawṣilī (15th cen.). Each author considers the used quotation(s) as a demonstration of the correctness of his own doctrine. The presentation intends, then, to offer an analysis of these Ephremian quotations, and the different ways and contexts in which they were used.
