Pope Shenouda vs Fr Matta al-Miskin's disciples on theosis

Dear NASCAS members,

I was reading on the recent polemic between the late Pope Shenouda on
the one hand and Fr Matta al-Miskin and his disciples on the other on
human deification (theosis / ta'līh or ta'alluh) and related subject.

In English there is an excellent analysis of this controversy in
Stephen Davis' book "Coptic Christology in Practice". In Arabic there
are the writings of Fr Matta, his disciples at the monastery of St.
Macarius, Dr. George Bebawi, and others.

Now here is my question: What has happened to this polemic in recent
years (2012-2016), after Pope Shenouda's repose? Has the new Pope
Tawadros expressed himself on the matter? Are both views, incompatible
though they are (in favour and against deification), considered
acceptable in the Coptic Church today? Has this polemic spread beyond
the Coptic Church to other members of the miaphysite communion? Does
it play any role in theological discussions between the Coptic Church
and the Eastern Orthodox?

This was a very sad episode in the life of the Coptic Church. There are some disciples of the late Pope who still defend his position. But I have the impression that this is not the position of Pope Tawadros. Probably Dr. George Bebawi, our great Theologian, is the best who could answer your question. He lives in the USA.
