Hello, does anyone have access to the Encyclopaedia of Islam, New Edition, particularly the entry on the Copts? I am looking for the encyclopaedia entry written by Azize Atiya.

Hi Havva,
Are you asking about Aziz Attiya's entry in the 2nd edition? He died in 1988, so he wouldn't have written or updated his entry for the 3rd/online edition....however, it is possible that someone updated his entry for the most recent edition. I've attached his entry from the 2nd edition (1986) here just in case it's what you're looking for.

I am looking for the entry on the Copts in the EI2 version. It is likely that there has been no update. Thank you.

Well, then the attachment should be what you're looking for as it is from the 2nd edition.

It seems so; it was necessary for my dissertation. Thank you.

I know that I have taken up a lot of the group’s time, but there are two studies that I have been having difficulty locating. One of them is Michael Brett’s “Population and Conversion to Islam in Egypt in the Mediaeval Period,” included in Egypt and Syria in the Fatimid, Ayyubid and Mamluk Eras, vol. 4 (International Colloquium, Leuven, 9–10 May 2000 and 2001).

The other is Michael Brett’s “Al-Karāza al-Marqusiyya: The Coptic Church in the Fatimid Empire.” I would be very grateful if you could advise me on how I might access these works. included in Egypt and Syria in the Fatimid, Ayyubid and Mamluk Eras, vol. 4 (International Colloquium, Leuven, 9–10 May 2000 and 2001).

Dear Havva,

Please excuse the poor scanning quality; I only have a hard copy of the book from my library. It is a difficult volume to locate.

“Hi, I am looking for two books but the authors listed online don’t match. Has anyone seen or heard of these books before? First: Yacoov lev — Coptic Christians and Muslims in Egypt 600–1500. Second: Heinz Halm — The Empire of Mahdi: The Fatimids. Am I maybe looking for these books under the wrong names?”
