Dear colleagues,

I'm excited to share the link to my new book, published open access in the Cambridge Semitic Languages and Cultures series edited by Geoffrey Khan et al. In the book, I undertake a linguistic analysis of all of the Gospel portions of the manuscript. To do so, I draw on relevant varieties and corpora of Arabic – from pre- and early Islamic epigraphy, medieval manuscripts, and Quranic recitation traditions – to contextualize the features attested in the manuscript. Ultimately, I contend that the linguistic and sociolinguistic contexts of the early Islamic period were different than heretofore conceptualized, and that the grammatical variation attested between the scribal hands that produced Vatican Arabic MS 13 reflects a more fluid and dynamic linguistic landscape.

I hope that you all find it an interesting and meaningful contribution to our shared exploration of Christian Arab communities.

All my very best,

Phillip Stokes
