Dear NASCAS:

I would like to draw your attention to an emerging online resource, the Sinai Manuscripts Digital Library. Many of you may know it already. It makes available hi-res images of the manuscripts of St. Catherine's Monastery of the Sinai. The most common languages in the images uploaded so far are Arabic and Syriac. The resource is presented through the library of my university (UCLA) in partnership with the partners named below (above all, of course, St. Catherine's Monastery):

One must register (free of charge) to use the site.

I am not directly involved in this project and therefore cannot answer questions about it. However, it is my understanding that this initiative differs in a few ways from other online repositories of images from the St. Catherine's Monastery manuscript collections, such as those available through the Library of Congress or through e-corpus. For example, the images are high-resolution color taken recently from the physical codices, not digitizations of older black-and-white microfilm. In addition, the New Finds have been scanned. New images are being uploaded regularly, as the project is ongoing. The metadata, too, are—or eventually will be—significantly enhanced.
