"Emanation and Creatio ex nihilo. Neoplatonism in the Arabic-Islamic World." Elvira Wakelnig, PhD, University of Vienna
At the beginning of the Graeco-Arabic translation movement (from around the 9th to the 11th cen. CE), a good number of Neoplatonic texts were rendered into Arabic and often ascribed to Aristotle. The so-called "Theology of Aristotle" which is based on Plotinus's Enneads IV-VI figures most prominently among them. In their philosophical thought, Arabic-speaking thinkers such al-Kindi, al-Amiri and al-Sijistani therefore used the concept of emanation transmitted on the authority of the most important Greek philosopher in the Arabic tradition as well as the religious belief in the creation from nothing. We will read and discuss different approaches to their understanding of these two concepts.
