Hello everyone,

I know this may be a rather complicated question, but does anyone know when the Coptic Church started using "Orthodox" in its title (ie-the Coptic Orthodox Church)? Is there a specific time period or date? Can you refer me to texts for citation?

Dear Candice,

I am not absolutely sure of when 
" Orthodox" has been introduced in the ecclesiastical vocabulary of the Coptic church. However the concept was clearly expressed  and reiterated by Pope Dioscorus I of Alexandria wo was deposed by the Council of Chalcedon in 451. 

I assume that this definition " Orthodox "  was adopted right after the schism of Chalcedony  or slightly later. The History of the Patriarchs , among other textual evidence, makes reference to its utilisation.
This adaptation can be seen as a result of its concurrent usage by the Greek church. 
It is important to look at this from the Greek church perspective , to  the  when and how they brought about their Orthodoxy .This can cast some good light on Dioscorus' response.
