An unpublished English translation of the "History of Physicians" by
Ibn Abi Usaibia (d. 1207) is now online, in the appendix to my
collection of the Fathers of the Church.

http://www.tertullian.org/fathers/index.htm#Ibn_Abi_Usaibia

The translation was made in 1954 by Lothar Kopf under a US government
programme, and the original typescript is held in the US Library of
Medicine.

I've written a brief introduction to it, based mainly on the entry in
Brockelmann's GAL.

The translation is public domain; my transcription of it and
introduction are also public domain. Do whatever you wish with it,
personal, educational or commercial.

The whole collection of public domain translations of the Fathers is
here:

http://www.tertullian.org/fathers

A CDROM of the collection is available for sale for those wishing to
support the work of the site:

http://www.tertullian.org/fathers/all_the_fathers_on_cd.htm

Funds from sales go on commissioning translations of previously
untranslated works.

All the best,

Roger Pearse

Dear Roger,

Thank you for this! - This translation of Ibn Abi Usaibi'a was
particularly timely, as I am having to translate a portion of this work
into Japanese at this very moment. - The deadline the publisher gave me
was actually today, which I don't think I'll be meeting.

And thank you also for all the useful material that you have on your
site, which is very much appreciated, I'm sure, by all.

Hidemi

Bien cher Roger,

Fraternellement,
P. Samir

Dear Hidemi,

I'm delighted to help!

It's such an interesting text from so many points of view, and not
just to Orientalists. It's the only source for Aristotle's will, for
instance.

What astonishes me is that a translation was actually made, and paid
for, and was then forgotten. Weird.

All the best,

Roger Pearse

Dear Fr Samir,

I am delighted to be able to help. There's not enough Oriental
material on the site, but that's because only a small amount of Arabic
Christian literature exists in out-of-copyright form. But I do what I
can!

Merry Christmas to you too!
