Dear Colleagues,

I am wondering if there are any sources on the history of Herod the Greate or the history of the Hasmonean dynasty in Arabic.

Is there any known translation of the works of Flavius Josephus into Arabic?

Thanks in advance,
Marc

Dear Marc,

Yes, there is a partial translation/reworking of Flavius Josephus into Arabic known as the Josippon. It has a very fascinating history. It apparently originated in the Jewish communities in 10-century Southern Italy, was translated from Hebrew into Arabic at some point later and it was used also by Coptic and Muslim intellectuals. There is an edition of the Jewish and the Judeo-Arabic texts, respectively by David Flusser and Shulamit Shela.

Best regards,
Martino

Dear Marc,

Some account of the Hasmoneans and Herodians also entered Arabic through the Arabic translation of Michael Rabo's chronicle, which of course was dependent upon Josephus.

Best wishes,
Thomas

Dear Marc, dear Martino,

to elaborate on what Martino said: material from Sefer Jossipon (which
came about in Judeo-Arabic) has also been reused in the so-called
Arabic 5 Maccabees which made it to e.g. the Paris and London
Polyglots.
For more information, see the attached articles.

Best,

Slavomír
