Would any list members know of sources discussing neo-martyrs from Arab lands during the Ottoman era (specifically the 16th to the 18th centuries)? I am familiar with the literature on Egypt and the Balkans, but not the Levant, Iraq, etc. Thank you.

Best,
Febe

Dear Febe,

Probably the best known Arab Orthodox martyr (from the 19th century) is St Joseph of Damascus (al-qiddis Yusuf al-Dimashqi), martyred during the riots of 1860.

See his brief Vita here:

Check also Archimandrite Tuma Bitar, al-Qiddisun al-mansiyun fi al-Turath al-Antaki, Beirut: Manshurat al-Nur, 1995.

See a brief review of the book here:

Yours
Sasha

Dear Febe,

There is a number of Armenian neo-martyrs from this period. I know
about them from the two Russian collections of translations of their
lives -

best
