HelloI've been drawing some shapes, just black outlines, then suddenly any new shapes I draw are not visible. I didn't change anything. Any idea what the problem could be? I have selected black for the colour.

Furthermore, how do drawing tablets work on PDN? Does it act as a mouse or will I need a mouse to select tools and other features? If I press the pen against the tablet will it automatically start drawing on the canvas or is that a limitation?

@BoltBait linked to the post for the first "alpha" build for 5.0, which contains a detailed description of all the new features in 5.0. Only the latest build (currently 5.0 beta build 8382) will have valid download links.

oil paint thinned with medium, I use a thin quick drying alkyd and a color like ultramarine blue, sienna, or umber, with small thin brushes. drawing with oil paint is a bit slower so take your time, but erasing mistakes or changing the drawing is so easily done with a rag damp with spirits.

your sketchings look great!

Thanks all for the prompt replies! I tried graphite pencil but could hardly see the marks it made on the oil (and it was 6b). Also, there is quite a bit of texture so the pencil tends to skip over the low parts. I will try the thinned oil paint and a fine brush this afternoon.

Annie. I once used an oil based pen for this and it would not cover but kept bleeding to the surface, even after applying multiple layers of paint over months. For me it pretty much ruined the picture.

The paint brush tool works normally upon starting up Affinity Photo, but after executing actions such as changing the brush, color, or swapping to another tool and then back to the brush, the paint brush tool will often enter a state where it will allow me to draw only straight lines. The mouse itself it still able to move freely, but when attempting to draw even a simple curve, a straight line will be drawn instead, starting from where the mouse initially was and ending at where the mouse stopped.

So far, the only solution I have to this is to close the application and start it again, which can be quite troublesome considering this issue happens every 5 to 10 minutes. I've even updated the application to the latest 1.7.2 update, but the same issue still happens.. I'm wondering if anyone is having the same issue? Or if there is any solution to this?

Disabling Windows Ink doesnt really solve the problem, since it disables very basic function of having pen pressure on my tablet and therefore just switching to even more severe problem for someone who uses the program for drawing and painting.

You can make any shape you want by adding a mesh shape to your object, selecting it and unwrapping by Project to View, scale and position the resulting UV in the UV editor in relation to the rest of your UV, and then paint it in the 3d view using Face Selection Masking. Not perfect, but actually quite useful. You can delete the mesh after and go about your manual painting process again if you want, or you can separate by selection so that you can hide it from view.

They have pland for much better PBR painting in future but no real code yet, but i hope master Pablo&others will do something after sculpt at least if not sooner. Maybe some more companies will donate Money or even better, developers to work on PBR Paint. Lets see what future brings.

Jane designed this course with specific supplies in mind. The techniques she introduces will work best if you have the art supplies she recommends, especially the fluid acrylic paint colors from Golden Artist Colors, because your results will be quite different if you use other paints. You have more flexibility with the other art supplies. Explore the full supply guide.

The course has exceeded my expectations and is so thorough, well-explained, and broken down into doable chunks. I think it's a fantastic course for anyone interested in birds and art; one builds their skills progressively so that by the time we get to the painting of the bird, we've learned a lot about how to work with the medium."

I think Jane Kim did an excellent job explaining the steps she takes to paint the birds. It was very clear and I enjoyed watching her model her process. It was helpful to be able to change speeds and pause when necessarily. I'm very satisfied with this course."

I come from an Objective-C background and I have been developing on the iOS and Mac OS platform for a number of years now. I love the concept of custom drawing and therefore I would like to replicate what had been done by me on the aforementioned platform.

In iOS I would call -drawRect() to draw a custom view and then, I could go ahead and add other visual components on top of that drawing. I know that there are equivalents in java swing and awt called paint() and paintComponent(). However, I am not quite sure how the drawing goes about. I do not know when to call the super method (beginning or end ?) and how to add other components to the custom drawn component (custom drawing sometimes appears on top, sometimes beneath).

The Photos app is primarily designed for viewing, organizing, and editing photos and images. It's more focused on managing your image library and making simple adjustments. The Photos app allows you to view and organize your photo collection, crop and rotate images, apply filters and basic enhancements, create simple video slideshows, and share photos with ease.

Paint is more suitable for creating simple drawings and performing basic image editing tasks. Paint provides tools for freehand drawing, inserting shapes, filling colors, cropping images, and adding text. It's a more versatile tool for creating original artwork or making basic edits to images.

We understand these objects visually and then communicate them in our drawings and paintings visually. Essentially, we are taking visual information, analyzing it, and then recording it on a flat surface to create an illusion.

When we draw from a photo, we are basically copying information that has already been flattened. In other words, some of the work has already been done for us. The visual information has already been simplified into shapes, values, and lines.

The best reference photos are the ones that you take yourself. You have control, in some cases, over the light, composition, and the vantage point. Creating reference photos is an art in itself and takes time and experience to perfect.

If your reference photo is less than optimal, then you could be limiting yourself and the potential drawing or painting that you create. If you rely heavily on a photo that is not successful on its own, then the resulting drawing or painting will not likely be successful either.

A photo however, captures the moment and subject in time. The light, angle, and colors all stay consistent. When a photo is used as a reference, we are no longer in a race against time. Instead, we can work slowly and methodically. We can make comparisons between the reference and the drawing, correcting mistakes as we go.

Photos also allow the artist to use certain devices and approaches that lead to greater accuracy. The grid technique, used by artists such as Chuck Close, relies heavily on the photo. Without it, the process is simply not possible.

But sometimes a photo is all we have left of someone who is no longer in our life. The photo may be a fairly accurate physical representation of the person, but does not necessarily convey what we saw in them and felt about them. If we want to use the photo as a guide to memory in making a drawing that shows how we saw and felt about them, I think it should be OK to do that. And I think such a drawing should be evaluated on its own merits. Just copying a photo is cheating, but capturing yourself in an interpretation of a photo is not IMHO. Not allowing photos is kind of like saying we have to give up on people just because they are no longer with us. That seems wrong to me.

I have been struggling with this for last few days and decided to get expert help here. I have drawing like below (original art is more complex) which was created using brush strokes (no built-in shape objects). I am trying to paint/draw inside using brush strokes just like "draw inside" feature of Illustrator. As it works for closed shapes so I thought making sure all lines are connected will suffice, but it didn't.

As a test, when I tried using Shape builder tool to color, it works perfectly as it treats inside square as a closed shape but I don't want fill colors so this wont work, I want to color using my textured brushes.

I have also tried coloring the background in another layer and using this drawing as clipping mask by Object>Compound Path>Make but it didn't help either. I am new to clipping mask so not sure if there is another way.

Edit: Billy's answer is perfect and I was able to do this quickly as a test. I can paint in multiple shapes like face, body, hair now. Just created a duplicate layer of drawing to keep my lines still there.

Whaaaaaat.I'm finding it incredibly hard to believe that every graphics program supports using the brush and pen through touch screens EXCEPT for Photoshop, the Queen of them all. Am I really going to have to draw in GIMP?I'm well aware that touch screens aren't nearly as ideal as graphic tablets but really, GIMP even supports pressure sensitivity and Photoshop doesn't support anything? Please, please incorporate this feature, it should have come standard years ago.

I have seen multiple, different answers on how to use a touchscreen with Photoshop. I have the lastest version currently installed, CC 2017, I have a dell Windows 10 touchscreen pc, and a wacom drawing pen and tablet.
