Narendra Kohli studied the entire material of the Ramayana and wrote a huge 1300 page novel RAM KATHA in seven parts. This is also published in two volumes as ABHYUDAYA. It was perhaps the first novel in any language that dealt with the entire Ramayana. It is a historical novel which is contemporary, progressive, modern, and logic based. Its basic story line comes from the cultural tradition of India and therefore it portrays the higher values of life.

The books in this 7 part series are:
DIKSHA
AVSAR
SANGHARSH KI OR
SAKSHATKAR
PRISHTHABHUMI
ABHIYAAN
YUDDHA

DIKSHA focuses on Rama’s initiation and his vow. It describes the conflict between good and evil, and Rama’s attempt to establish a new society based on egalitarian values.

AVSAR covers the reforms that Rama brings about in the society around him. Rama is seen opposing blind rituals and customs. Instead, he propounds a society based on equality and mutual respect.

SANGHARSH KI OR covers the story of Rama’s acts of female emancipation, his forging the link between the intelligentsia and governance, and his opposition to injustice in all forms.

SAKSHATKAR depicts the deception by Shurpanakha and the dastardly abduction of Sita. The novelist is at his best here, beautifully describing the mindset of the protagonists and the games that they play.

PRISTHABHUMI describes Bali’s domineering and cruel rule, the friendship between Rama and Sugriva and Rama’s slaying of Bali.

ABHIYAAN describes in detail Rama’s attempts to locate Sita. Uniquely, it gives a very realistic description of the Vanara Sena.

YUDDHA is the superbly crafted climax of the Ramayana, complete with riveting descriptions of the war between Rama and Ravana. The writer’s skill lies in presenting this epic battle as the struggle between the oppressed and the oppressors.

RAM KATHA is a skilfully penned insight into the Ramayana, using modern humanitarian terms of reference. It fulfils it duties as a novel by presenting a very incisive description of the mindset of all the key protagonists. But what makes this book an enduring classic is the striking simplicity of phrase and the flowing, seamless narrative. The author’s story telling skills are so good that the reader, regardless of his religious beliefs, is compelled to turn pages. The book is handsomely printed in a large font size, and extremely low priced.

Narendra Kohli is probably the best known and certainly the most highly paid living Hindi novelist in India. Through his writings, he has made an important contribution towards the enrichment of literature and the progress of society.

His epic novels based on the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and its various characters, and on Svami Vivekananda are extremely successful and have set new records for the sales of Hindi books by contemporary writers.
