Narendra
Kohli is one of India’s best read writers. His writing is assured and
nuanced. His understanding of ancient India and her heroes, both
mythical and real, is unparalleled. He looks at history not with the
rose-tinted glasses of the romantic, but with the impartiality of a
scholar. He is equally at home writing historical novels or contemporary
fiction. He has written novels, short stories, memoirs and satirical
pieces.
This is the incisively written novelised biography of Vasudeva and Devaki, the parents of Lord Krishna.
Vasudeva
and Devaki, despite their noble birth, led tragic lives. Circumstances
beyond their control led to their incarceration and the horrific killing
of their six newborn babies. They were without any help. No one in the
land was willing to help them in any way. For they were imprisoned by
Kamsa, Devaki’s brother and the tyrannical ruler of Mathura. Kamsa had
been advised by an astrologer that Vasudeva’s child would kill him. So,
the cruel Kamsa imprisoned both Vasudeva and Devaki and cold-bloodedly
killed each of their newborn infants.
The unceasing cruelty of Kamsa failed to break Vasudeva and Devaki’spirit. With
a great deal of courage and skill, Vasudeva managed to smuggle away
Krishna, his seventh child. As Krishna grew older, he came back and
destroyed Kamsa and his rule of terror. That encounter is also
thrillingly described in this novel.
Narendra
Kohli’s sublime skill lies in presenting this classical tale as a
political struggle between the tyrannical ruler and the working class.
Hence, the strife of Vasudeva is not his alone, it is felt by all of
India’s masses. And the fight is not for his own family, but for the
survival of the common man.
Like
all his books based on ancient Indian mythology, this one also remains
contemporary in terms of the protagonist’s dilemmas and how they
confront them. And Narendra Kohli has managed to write yet another
riveting novel.
We
are proud to distribute this one, as well as all the other books by
