Marie,
Thank you so much for helping everyone keep it touch. I'm hoping you
can help me. My daughter plans to be a veterinarian. She has some
clinical experience, but she's been told she needs a variety of
experiences. She will be home from college this Christmas and then in
the summer and would like to explore some volunteer opportunities.
Can you point me in the right direction? Do you know of places in
Orange County that take volunteers?
Thanks,
Bettie

Hi Betty,
I would recommend she volunteer at an animal shelter. If you are
close to the Irvine Animal Shelter, that has a really nice facility
and a full-service veterinary clinic. They do great training for the
volunteers and supervise them well so that no one gets thrown into a
situation that is too tough. I would also recommend volunteering at
the Shea Center in San Juan Capistrano. It's a therapeutic riding
center that uses horses to help disabled kids. But they always need
help with the horses there and they train the volunteers well also.
That would give her some good large animal experience. If these
places are too far away, what area are you interested in? I can give
you some other recommendations. I've worked with lots of animal
groups over the years all over Southern California. Tell your
daughter I wish her the best of luck.
:) Marie

Thanks for the recommendations. The Irvine Animal Shelter would
work. I like the full-service clinic. Long Beach has a large
shelter, she should look into both. You reminded me that Huntington
Beach has a therapeutic riding
center. Now I can give her a list. Do you know of any place that
works with exotic or wild animals that takes volunteers? On my list
is the Marine Mammal rescue in Laguna.
