Rehabilitation, Not Destruction must be the way forward!
17th June, 2024: June 16th was the second day of Narmada Bachao Andolan’s Satyagraha in Kheda Muhalla, Chikhalda, Madhya Pradesh. The day started as it always does, with prayers for Narmada, as well as the humanitarian values and protection of natural resources with their rights.
Saraswati bahen from Semalda, Bhagwan Septa from Narmada Nagar, Gauri Badole and Sita Avasya from Pichodi started their 24-hour relay fast joining Medha didi who is on an indefinite fast.
The Tehsildar of Kukshi brought a message from the Collector, who also called and invited a few representatives of Dhar, the District Headquarters. All those on the sit-in, on consultation, refused to accept the same. Mukesh Bhagoriya and Medha didi humbly conveyed to the Collector, that it would not be possible or acceptable as all the issues are already discussed with him but not execution has taken place, therefore they expressed their expectation that the issues and demands are related to not one, but four districts and hence, the Commissioner (NVDA) should hold the decisive dialogue along with the Collectors.
The elected representative MLA from Badwani, Rajan Mandloi, came to the Satyagraha to extend his support. He narrated how he has witnessed the struggle of the people in the valley, which he said, is the only way that has helped receive rehabilitation for thousands of people and it is absolute injustice that thousands have faced submergence before and in 2023 without rehabilitation. He said that the questions he raised in the previous session were given an unacceptable reply by the Government and will take up this issue in the upcoming assembly session.
The representatives of Adivasi Yuva Sanghatan came and declared support. They even remembered the martyrdom of Birsa Munda, Tantia Bhil and other adivasi freedom fighters who laid down their life to save jal, jungle, zameen (water, forest, land). Representatives from the environmental group Bhartiya Puthvirakshan Chalaval arrived from a distant place in Maharashtra and showed their support.
The day was filled with people’s stories of struggle, an assertion of rights, and song makes up a big part of the movement. Two students from Dhadgaon, Maharashtra, sang the iconic “hum honge kaamyab” (we shall overcome), in support for the movement. The workers left unemployed overnight from Century Mills, which is owned by the Birla Group’s Century Textiles & Industries Limited, also participated in solidarity with the families affected by the SS Dam project. Hundreds of people participated who belonged to various communities and categories of project affected families, such as farmers, cattle grazers, fish workers, adivasis, and labourers, who are yet to get rehabilitation benefits…
The day ended with women of the movement, sharing songs of struggle and hope for justice.

17 जून, 2024: 16 जून, मध्य प्रदेश के चिखल्दा के खेड़ा मुहल्ला में नर्मदा बचाओ आंदोलन के सत्याग्रह का दूसरा दिन था। दिन की शुरुआत हमेशा की तरह नर्मदा के लिए प्रार्थना के साथ हुई, साथ ही मानवीय मूल्यों और प्राकृतिक संसाधनों की सुरक्षा के साथ-साथ उनके अधिकारों के लिए भी प्रार्थना की गई।
सेमल्दा की सरस्वती बहन, नर्मदा नगर के भगवान सेप्टा, पिछोड़ी की गौरी बडोले और सीता अवस्या अनिश्चितकालीन उपवास पर बैठी मेधा दीदी के साथ मिलकर अपना 24 घंटे का क्रमिक उपवास शुरू किया।
कुक्षी के तहसीलदार कलेक्टर का संदेश लेकर आए, जिन्होंने नर्मदा बचाओ आंदोलन के कुछ प्रतिनिधियों को जिला मुख्यालय धार में बातचीत के लिए आमंत्रित किया। आपस में बातचीत के बाद, धरने पर बैठे सभी लोगों ने इसे स्वीकार करने से मना कर दिया। मुकेश भगोरिया और मेधा दीदी ने विनम्रतापूर्वक कलेक्टर को बताया कि यह संभव या स्वीकार्य नहीं होगा क्योंकि सभी मुद्दों पर पहले से ही उनके साथ चर्चा की गई है, लेकिन चर्चा का कोई सकारात्मक निर्णय नहीं हुआ है, इसलिए उन्होंने अपनी अपेक्षा व्यक्त की कि मुद्दे और मांग एक नहीं बल्कि चार जिलों से संबंधित हैं, और इसलिए, आयुक्त (एनवीडीए) को कलेक्टरों के साथ निर्णायक वार्ता करनी चाहिए।
बड़वानी से निर्वाचित प्रतिनिधि विधायक राजन मंडलोई अपना समर्थन देने के लिए सत्याग्रह में आए। उन्होंने बताया कि उन्होंने घाटी के लोगों के संघर्ष को देखा है, जिसके बारे में उन्होंने कहा कि यह एकमात्र तरीका है जिससे हजारों लोगों को पुनर्वास प्राप्त करने में मदद मिली है, और यह सरासर अन्याय है कि हजारों लोग पहले और 2023 में बिना पुनर्वास के डूब का सामना कर रहे हैं। उन्होंने कहा कि पिछले सत्र में उनके द्वारा उठाए गए सवालों का सरकार द्वारा कोई उत्तर नहीं दिया गया और वो इस मुद्दे को आगामी विधानसभा सत्र में भी उठायेंगे। आदिवासी युवा संगठन के प्रतिनिधियों ने भी अपना समर्थन जाहिर किया, उन्होंने अपने पूर्वज बिरसा मुंडा, तांतिया भील और अन्य आदिवासी स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों की शहादत को भी याद किया, जिन्होंने जल, जंगल, जमीन को बचाने के लिए अपनी जान की कुर्बानी दी। महाराष्ट्र के दूर दराज के कई जिलों से भारतीय जीवन पृथ्वीरक्षण चळवळ आंदोलन के लोग उपवास स्थल पर अपना समर्थन देने आए |
आज का दिन नर्मदा में लोगों के संघर्ष की कहानियों, अधिकारों के दावे और गीतों से भरा हुआ था, जो हमारे आंदोलन का एक बड़ा हिस्सा है। महाराष्ट्र के धड़गांव के दो छात्रों ने आंदोलन के समर्थन में "हम होंगे कामयाब" (हम जीतेंगे) यह गीत गाया। सेंचुरी मिल से रातों-रात बेरोजगार हुए, श्रमिक जनता संघ से जुड़े और रोजगार के अपने अधिकार के लिए संघर्ष कर रहे श्रमिकों ने भी सरदार सरोवर बांध परियोजना से प्रभावित परिवारों के साथ एकजुटता प्रदर्शित की | सैकड़ों लोग शामिल हुए जो विभिन्न समुदायों और परियोजना प्रभावित परिवारों की श्रेणियों से थे, जैसे किसान, मवेशी चराने वाले, मछली का व्यवसाय करनेवाले, श्रमिक, आदिवासी और मजदूर, जिन्हें अभी तक पुनर्वास का लाभ नहीं मिला है... दिन का समापन आंदोलन की महिलाओं द्वारा संघर्ष और न्याय की उम्मीद के गीतों को साझा करने के साथ हुआ।
